Post subject:  New server replacing MrBlonde

Hi community,

We're looking into buying a new server to replace our main gameserver, MrBlonde. There are several reasons to why we want to replace MrBlonde;

- Server is becoming old and is showing defects. Out of 16 memory slots only 5 remain working leaving us with 5 instead of 16GB RAM.
- Due to it's hardware issues this server is causing small freezes and laggyness on the gameservers hosted on it
- Hardware is becoming outdated, when we bought the machine hardware requirements to host games were 25-50% lower then they are today

What do we plan on doing with this new machine?

- Move over all current servers from old MrBlonde to the new MrBlonde, these are TF2, L4D2, CS:GO and KF
- Move the minecraft servers off MrGreen so space becomes available on our windows platform to host games which don't support Linux (For example, DayZ). MC on it's turn will have more resources available if required
- Other stuff we haven't thought about yet

From the old server we'll only move the harddisks over to the new machine, these harddisks are high performance 15.000RPM SAS drives. Due to the new hardware the server quality will improve greatly and we'll have more space available to host other games.

As you would expect, new hardware costs money. As we are a community, and I simply cannot bring up the money on my own, we'll need your support! Our expectations are that the new server will be quite a bit cheaper than our previous buys (which where between 2500,- and 3000,- for each server), somewhere around 2000,- Euro's.

I am willing to chip in 1000,- Euro's to head start the funding, the other 50% needs to come from you guy's and gals!

As soon as I know it's exact price and spec's I'll be updating this thread. (Currently informing on configurations and best prices)

There are several way's of donating to specialattack. You can donate using paypal, direct bank transfer or through regular mail(not advised). If you have no access to paypal or international bank transfers, contact me and we'll sort out a way. If you donate, please mention it's for the new machine! (We still need to pay for the monthly datacenter costs as well, which I am willing to carry on my own as long as we're collecting funds for the new machine).

Thanks for helping out, and remember, no donation is too small! Every penny counts and gets us closer to our goals. Of course you'll be rewarded for your donations. Currently we can reward in TF2 and MC. For CS:GO we're still converting SpA points to be able to work there.

- The SpecialAttack community (you, me, them, everybody!)

Current donations:
Saint K. 1000,-
_9mmNL_ 200,-
Dunken 200,-
DonDonDon 25,-
annarack 100,-
Blackhawk 100,-
Frimple 375,-

Total: 2000,-
To go: 0,-

Call it Ms.Purple? 8)

So, this is basically in the long run going to lower the price of running/maintenance by updating hardware and moving most (if not all) of our servers to the same machine? If this is so, that's amazing. I'm wondering what'll become of Mr.Green (i.e. What games are going to be hosted, what new games are planned, etc.).

Reservoid Dog...? ._. Never heard of it...

After some Googling I found out what the hell it is.

So if you have -
  • NiceGuyEddie.specialattack.net
    MrBlonde.specialattack.net
    MrGreen.specialattack.net
    MrWhite.specialattack.net
    (Backup server Mr. Pink?)
- you'll still have Orange, Blue, Brown and J. Cabot open? ಠ_ಠ Derp.

And then also phoning my mother, which really bank, is too far.

Post subject:  Re: New server replacing MrBlonde

For the interested, here are the specs of the machine I have selected so far. I have chosen to go for a single CPU system with a high clock. (We need a lot of power per core, rather then a lot of lower powered cores).

RECT Rack Server RS-8560B4
Intel Xeon Processor E3-1270v2 (3.50 GHz, 8 MB); <-- CPU
6x Kingston DIMM 4 GB PC3-10600 ECC (24GB); <-- Memory
SuperMicro X9SCM-F; <-- Motherboard
SuperMicro System Management Card (on Board); <- Remote management HW card
3ware SAS 9750-4I; <- SAS RAID controller
Slim-Line DVD-writer; <- DVD player
Chenbro 19" rack-server-case 1U (black) with 4x HotSwap; <- Server case
Mounting bracket set; <- Mouting brackets to mount the server in the DC's 19" rack
Zippy 500 watt power supply; <- PSU

This system should come down around 2000,- (give or take a 100).

I am still looking for alternatives, see if there is better hardware for our money. If I can't find anything better, this machine will be ordered early next week.

Are you going for a hire purchase?
I did some calculations of my own and I got to 1.851€... Must've done something wrong... Anyway, that's a shitload of cash. How much do you have now (roughly)? Do you need the hardware exactly how quickly?

No hire, we'll do a direct puchase. Mind you, it should come down to about 1900,- incl. shippingcosts and insurance during shipping.

We have 2000,- now (roughly ;)). We want the new hardware asap.

Ahh! Perfect. So we'll be back to "normal" in no time, eh? That's good to hear. I'll throw some cash in when I get some :P

New status update:

Server order has been placed & paid for. A small change to it's setup, it will contain 32 instead of 24GB memory.

I'm guessing end of next week, ish. It takes 3 day's to clear the wire transfer, then another few days to have it assembled & tested, and then it needs to be shipped to my country/house (it's coming from Germany).
