The plan at the moment is to have a highlander on any day between (and including) Sunday 13th December and Sunday 20th December, usual 20:00 cet start time. If you're interested in playing please let me know exactly which dates you can/can't play!
I know that Sunday is our usual highlander day but some people (Zombie, basically ) work on Sunday nights so I want to see what our options are. For the record I can't do Friday 18th unless we start at like 21:00 cet (meaning a late finish, but then it's Friday so whatever) but everything else is fine.
Second question: would you guys be interested in having two highlander nights in the same week (e.g on Sunday 13th and again on Sunday 20th)? Personally I think this would be cool but it's difficult enough to get the interest for just one highlander night, so I'd only try this if there was 90+% demand for it. If this is a shit idea and you don't want to play videogames all the time then just tell me
Expect the usual highlander announcement thread to appear this weekend
edit: I'm recording steam chat logs from people too lazy to log in to the forums below
ZombieStalin: i am free tuesdays-fridays, usually i do things on tuesday and thursday but they aren't allways 100%. So the best days for me are either a wednesday or a Friday
[SpA]Scatterbrain: cool, noted
[SpA]Scatterbrain: the plan is to put the announcement up this weekend, is that enough warning for the tuesday/thursday after
[SpA]Scatterbrain: ?*
ZombieStalin: It should be, we usually plan to do the things like the day before anyways
ZombieStalin: Between the dates you've mentioned though I think i am busy on the Wednesday the 16th
ZombieStalin: but that might be the midnight release for star wars, so i maybe around, I wull have to double check and get bk to you.
[SpA]cecarrot: Definetely up
[SpA]Scatterbrain: cool
[SpA]Scatterbrain: all nights?
[SpA]cecarrot: a lot of them at least
[SpA]Scatterbrain: good enough lol
Cman: 18th 19th and 20th all work for me unless x-mas plans come up
[Pisnac say he can't start til 21:00; Friday 21:00 might be an option for us]
[Mac confirmed that the rest of the week should be fine]
[Wildblaze: usually fine apart from Saturday, will need to check specific dates though

I think I can play day after Tuesday, if people are needed that is. Otherwise I suck at the game.

If someone explains the rules to me I'd be glad to join in (providing I'm not somehow in school.) The only day I have plans is on the 15th, I'm going to be at a basketball game playing for the pep band.

Just as a heads up: from past experience we know that people with under 100 hours of TF2 or with over 100 ping generally have a difficult time with highlander, and afaik you fit both categories. I think that because you've got experience playing an FPS as a team (CS:GO) it won't be so bad, but if you lag all night/have no idea what you're doing that will suck for both you and your team. I'll let this be your decision
The brief rundown of highlander: 2 teams, 9 players per team, exactly 1 of each class per team. We usually play three maps, the win conditions/rules change depending on the gamemode. There are some unlock restrictions but it's only the really bullshit stuff that gets banned. It's taken fairly seriously, i.e you're expected to play as a team and know (or agree with your team) roughly what your class should be doing for each map/situation and then be able to do it fairly competently - I can help with this if you don't know, so can the highlander team/highlander regulars I think. It's great fun and I love it
Those are the most basic of basics, if you (or anyone else for that matter) want more give me a poke. Just beware that I might start talking about the complexities of holding the last point on pl_upward for the next 5 hours

I started to do this then realised how difficult this stuff is to explain without using screenshots but I'll talk about some other introductory stuff instead seeing as people are interested + we might have some new guys joining us.
(Nobody actually has to read this and it has nothing to do with arranging dates etc so I've hidden it below.)
I can't find a good overall/introductory guide to highlander, most of the information out there is in terms of either class-specific or map-specific guides, I'll link some videos/youtube channels below.
Some useful phrases:
The 'combo' - The medic + demo, supported by the heavy and usually the pyro too. The core of your team, these guys almost always play together: the medic provides the all-important healing and ubers, the demoman deals major damage, the heavy and the pyro work together to protect them and deny the area around them.
The 'flank' - The scout + soldier, sometimes includes the engi if he's using minisentries. The most mobile and flexible part of your team, can either work together to make plays and create openings for the combo or to defend the flank (areas that the combo can't protect by themselves).
Uber advantage - The % difference between the two medics' ubercharges. For example, if your medic has 80% uber and theirs has 30% then you have a 50% uber advantage. As you guys know ubers are all-powerful in highlander: if you're defending and have a 50% uber advantage then you're happy, but if you're at a 50% disadvantage then you want to seriously consider backing up as it will be very difficult to defend against an ubered team.
Numbers advantage - When you have 'numbers advantage' you have more players alive than the other team do (although knowing which classes are dead is imo more important than knowing how many are dead: losing your medic is almost always much worse than losing, say, your spy (sorry Dekar )).
For me, the most interesting part of competitive TF2 is about your 'gamesense'.
Having gamesense is being aware of the situation and being able to judge how best to deal with it, even if it's as simple as "we have to run away because we're 5 players down and at uber disadvantage". Judging something like that can be surprisingly difficult when you're busy trying to shoot people, remembering if the spy died recently, listening to mumble etc. Having gamesense comes down partly to understanding how the game works beforehand and partly to experience. (#1 tip - keep an eye on the killfeed in the top right and keep checking the scoreboard to see who's dead/alive.)
For example, say you're playing engi on the 1st point of pl_badwater. Their spy saps your sentry, the soldier spams it with direct hit and it goes down almost immediately. Should you try to rebuild the sentry in the same place or should your team fall back to the roof on 2nd point to try and get a secure hold there? If everyone else in your team is fine then you can probably afford to rebuild, but what if your demo dies? Or what if your flank dies and they're spamming your combo from the hill? Or what if your soldier manages to bomb their medic and force them to uber early? Any number of factors like these influence your decision making.
SpA highlanders don't usually get *that* complex (or at least whenever I'm on a team it's usually just a case of I'll work things out, call whether we're pushing or not and if I'm lucky someone follows me ) but you guys get the picture, there's a lot more to it than being mechanically good at your class.
Anyway, some youtubes!
Personally I got re-interested in highlander after watching casts of high-level games. I don't think they're the best way to 'learn' the game but they're entertaining and give you a flavour of the big picture. Blackout Gaming covers most of the EU HL scene. A good recent game is this one if you want somewhere to start:
Imo the best way to learn highlander is by watching high-level players. Be warned, most of the stuff below is really in-depth. Some of it stuff will be outdated, be careful with anything older than a year.
(Not actually nsfw)
Karl Sagan - Just found this tonight so I haven't watched anything yet, this looks to be a mix of Heavy-specific stuff and an updated 'The Meta Way' The Meta Way - An excellent resource for map-specific strategies, The Meta Way series covers everything that every class 'should' be doing on a given map. Interestingly this changes all the time as teams try different things and find better strats but this is a good palce to start anyway.
Kresnik - probably the best heavy in the game Rondego - more Heavy stuff, I've only watched a couple of PoV's and haven't checked out his guides. Ruskeydoo - another Heavy, kind of old but his "talk through" videos are nice to watch
Chuck Redfield - Engineer, his "engineer's guide to" series is a great introduction to the common build spots on every map. Anything with 'scrims' or 'UGC' in the title is him playing highlander. gaber0ll - Engineer PoV's sigafoo - another engi, I like his "commentary" videos
Miknando - Spy PoV's stabby stabby - Spy, a mix of highlander and pub stuff, not in-depth like the other channels I've linked but really impressive and entertaining anyway.
There are more out there, let me know if you want anything for a specific class!

Gonna post the announcement thread tomorrow or Sunday, get your replies in quick if you want to be taken into consideration!
Based on responses here + what I've been told on steam our best options are Wednesday 16th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th. Saturday may require a slightly later start (20:30-21:00) as my plans might run on, but a later start is better for some anyway.
We'll almost definitely have one on Sunday: if everyone confirmed + all of the "'maybe's" for Sunday turn up then that's a full 18 people already. I'm not hearing any objections to two highlanders in one week, should we try for two of these dates?
My plans for Friday 18th have changed so I can't guarantee I can play never mind organise stuff. A 21:00 cet start on Friday is a kind of viable option, it would just means someone else needs to run it on the night.

I'll be able to do Sundays no probls but the other days I'll have to play by ear so if I'm needed and I'm about i'll be there fo'sho.
need to start being sociable again for my own sanity
