Folding@Home is a really cool cause that allows users to contribute their idle CPU to a large pool of computer which are being used to study Protein Folding. This will hopefully help scientists to understand more about diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease allowing them to find a cure!

This cause is backed by large companies such as Google, and previously Sony

But I don't want my cpu to be busy with this allowing me not to work!!
Not to worry, you have control over how much CPU (From off to full) this program uses so it won't slow you down when you need to use your computer.

More Details can be found here: http://folding.stanford.edu/
If you guys decide to join up, use the Specialattack team id: 225181

You should be added to the list once you complete a project

This is pretty cool, I think we're going to see a lot more causes outsourcing to home computers for number crunching. Could lead to some significant advances.

I'm with junco, but, 9mm has a point.

There are reasons people don't mine bitcoins endlessly unless they have the resources and the money.

We've done this for years!

There should still be traces of a group called 'new_folder' in the stats, me and a bunch of friends.

Seeing today my money goes towards other things (spa, network lab, etc.) I'll skip this one. But in the name of science I'd like to see as much people join in to this as possible!

Speaking of which, I won't be paying electric in uni, I could always throw up a dedicated tower :ugly:

Existing group?

People who leave their PCs idling are wasting electricity anyway :P Not to mention all the stuff you might have running like torrents and chat.

I've optimised my PC to use up less energy when unused, so I'm not so sure about that wasting too much energy. Not sure if it works, but at least my screen goes completely offline in time :ugly: Took a gander with a voltmeter and it seemed to uphold my thesis.

Anyway, as long as it takes up as much as it does, I consider it too much to consider "paying" for the Folding.

I dont think there are any clients left in that group.

Well Ive been thinking about this topic in bed at 4am, and came with the brilliant idea to setup some PCs at work in a corner to run some fold projects 24/7 untill I get fired :ugly:

Dude the potential for distributing computing work to people's computer's is like big! This project itself is pretty significant in my opinion, you might not be getting paid or any material reward, but you're getting involved in human progress just by idling your pc. It's not so much paying, it's donating/contributing.

Stickin' it to the man

I think that if I tried this my PC would keel over and die... again. More power to those that do it though.

In the original post it talks about different settings, those are nice, but if you go to the advanced options you can select the exact percentage of processing power you wish to dedicate.
