I was just wondering if anyone have some experience with 3D printers, especially RepRap printers.

Not me, however I am starting to grow a mild interest in it as well. Seems like a cool concept, but waiting for it to become a bit more advanced.

There was one at a stand I had to be at for work experience back in November, it was a pretty cool thing, it created like big lego plastic pieces out of a plastic wire.
Pic got too big, here's a puush :ugly:

Old school had a $70k one, amazing shit. There are huge websites where people make designs for you to just print out on any printer.

New University has tons of them. So awesome.

A friend of mine bought one of those cheaper options, something called like a MakerBot(??) if I remember correctly. Worked pretty damn good.

I'm always sending friends to make shit for me now :5:

Running out of time, will answer any specifics if you need me too later.

What shit are you making?

Outside of modeling 3d printers still seem too gimmicky

That's what I'm wondering as well. What could you possibly currently make, accept for gimmickry?

I think right now people just like them because it seems like a prerequisite for something like the Star Trek replicator. Eventually this could definitely be something useful, but right now it's pretty limited in the things you can do or make.

Definitely true, they are limited in what they can make. It all depends what you would plan to use them for. Like myself, i've only made little things for fun. ie. a plastic money clip, model penis, etc. Mostly stuff for fun.

But, don't let what I do with my friends money discourage you :P Check out here: http://www.thingiverse.com/ they have some cool designs all you really have to do is download and hit print!

You should go shout at UVPurple, I remember him telling me he wanted to make a business out of 3d printing.

The one and only (619)
I went with my college to the local library and we took part in a competition to see who can build a 3D Printer the fastest, (in this case the https://www.ultimaker.com/, we won and took home two of them. It was actually pretty easy to build and setup from no experience. Also the fact it can build its own replacement parts kinda makes it cost efficient apart from the material cost which is actually quite cheap at around £20 I think.

Quite like how things like this are becoming possible with 3D printers. Generally durable working plastic parts would need resources the general public tend not to have.
