Saint K. is currently looking into hosting another game, but TF2 nerds as we are, the SpA members have been unable to come up with a game for us to host.

Therefore, we would like to hear which hostable multiplayer games the non-member community are in to.

There are two things that are important:
1) Is MUST be a game that can be hosted on dedicated servers (obviously)
2) It must be a somewhat popular game

Personally, besides TF2, I only play Trackmania United, World in Conflict and Battlefield 2, only one of which is hostable (Trackmania)

If SpA is gonna host it, you already have me as a player

It depends a bit on what the server sided files are going to do... Currently i cannot find any information if your free to host it, and on which platforms it will be availible (linux/windows). So if anyone finds info on this give me a poke!

Hmm apperantly the multiplayer is pretty basic stuff, according to eurogamer.net
Quote:
We've since managed to play with a handful of people on LIVE, and here's the deal. Essentially there's only one fairly basic team-based multiplayer mode (playable ranked or unranked, as usual), and six medium-sized maps. Matches support either 14 or 20 players, with the usual options to toggle round and prep times, friendly fire and whether voice chat is enabled. Set-up is as simple as selecting from the available weapons (such as sniper rifle, machine gun and bazooka) and diving straight into a simple attack or defend match. Attackers must raise the flag, while, obviously, defenders must ensure it remains lowered. From initial impressions, there's not a huge amount to it, other than trying take out your opponents and all converging on the flag. Apart from the ability to drive a tank, the action is familiar team-based run and gun stuff, albeit with more emphasis on making good use of cover. A little underwhelming if we're frank.
Mind you, I don't really trust eurogamer in the online department. Even though they are one of the few to actually admit that during their review time there were hardly any games online... makes me wonder how other sites seem to boast about multiplayer in a game. Anyhow still sounds rather basic.

We're currently PM-ing each other with Baal about the "retro weekend" (CS 1.6) and potential MOD testing weekends. Perhaps there are MODs that people would find interesting because these are far easier to get (for free) than assuming that many people will play stuff like Brothers in Arms.

Sorry, SonnY - you know - I'm identifying people only by racial and national stereotypes so both you and Baal (Blackhawk too?) fall into the category "Ze Germanz!". ^^

Yep, that's precisely SonnY Baalhawk's plan - uhm. ^^

Yeah, sounds good as a potential server candidate, I guess, but it isn't free so it would have to compete with all the other commercial games mentioned so far (Quake 3, Brothers in Arms, etc.) - we have to make a survey or something like Spike and SaintK said... There's no point in running something that next to no SpA members are playing (it would open our community to new players but I think there should be at least some degree of overlapping) and are not willing to buy (since it's not free).

How about that:

Write a post with all the games you're suggesting AND update it constantly as new games are mentioned (by stating if you own a particular title (free games excluded - everybody has access to them) and/or would be interested in it).

Example:

[SpA]Lim-Dul

Own game suggestions:
  • Free, popular (would have to be tested during some weekend events) HL2 mods
  • Warsow (since Q3 has been mentioned and the gameplay is VERY similar - it's free, which is good)
  • Teeworlds - for the lulz and since the server is so light on resources. ^^
Attitude towards other games mentioned:
  • Trackmania United: Don't own it, not interested
  • Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway: Don't own it, not interested
  • Day of Defeat Source: Own it, potentially interested
  • Quake 3: Own it, interested in a "retro weekend" kind of way
  • Ballmen - free mod, so look at the first paragraph
I think we should make another topic with posts similar to the suggestion above to keep everything clean and easy to read. The discussion about potential candidates etc. could go on in this topic.

Well - the review version for journalists already arrived a while ago (I don't have it but it is available in our office) but I'm still not interested and don't consider buying the game myself from what I saw, read and heard from my colleagues. =)

free games, forget it.
Old games, forget it.
We're talking about new games, that are coming soon, potentially hostable, massive multiplayer, cool,a game that has potential to be popular, etc.
Free games is just bullocks, not our aim.Old games is not doable, like trying to get a popular source server going. That's just not worth the trouble and too much really good servers out there to compete with, with not enough community members who play the game.

Hmm - in that case you can safely postpone the topic for half a year or so. I don't see any exciting game that would require dedicated server hosting coming out in 2008... If I were to give an early synopsis: 2008 wasn't a very good year for computer games, I mean, compared to 2007.

I'm not joking - I did some quick browsing through release lists and couldn't find any candidates, check out for yourself.

those 6 months you're talking about, are they based on a specific game or just a wild guess?

Wild guess and a silent hope that the mainstream industry will come up with something cool (multiplayer wise) during the next 6 months. ;-)
Don't get me wrong - I am looking forward to many games but not ones that would fulfill our requirements... I must say I was shocked myself to see that there are e.g. next to no multiplayer shooters to anticipate since that's also what I'm usually reviewing. I guess it will be a tough year financially. ^^

We can look forward to stuff like StarCraft 2, Battlefield Heroes or Diablo III which will surely spawn a vivid community BUT they don't require any hosting on our side.

Perhaps Call of Duty: World at War? But it's slated for a November release... Other than that I only see titles that won't have multiplayer, no dedicated servers or will plainly suck. ;-)

Since SaintK is planning to go to the Leipzig GC he will probably come back with more news - some titles are announced only on big conventions or only several months before release (just like movies). There's still hope that something unexpected will pop up but currently we have no alternatives to TF2, I guess, if we stick to the criteria you mentioned.

You do know that you can download Trackmania Nations Forever for free, and play on United maps (As long as they are stadium only, which accounts for like 90% of all united maps), right ?

I agree, Trackmania is not the type of game we're looking at.

We try to keep a certain profile, and not just host any game because we can. Trackmania doesn't fit in our profile imo.
