Zelda is the epitome of what is wrong with Nintendo and therefore the Nintendo fans. That talentless, jerk-off, hack of a designer Miyamoto made one game then repeated it 20 times over the next 20 years adding pointless little gimmicks along the way in an attempt to hide his self plagiarism. The man should be strung up by his tiny, pathetic gonads then shot and all of the Zelda fans rounded up for intense deprogramming.
The sooner Nintendo crumble and break under the crushing weight that is the debt caused by the Wii, the better. Gaming will be a much better and brighter place without those tossers around.

I just wish I understood your particular brand of daffy. Sure, liking "A" Zelda game would make sense, but liking "all" of them? WTF? For starters there is no chance in hell you have played anywhere NEAR all of them and the ones you have played are all the recent ones; those that even the most die-hard Nintendo fan will admit are just clones of each other. There are plenty of games out there to get frenzied about - these cookie-cutter Zelda ones are just a peculiar choice.

I'm all for varying opinion, but ravenous, zealot-like behaviour over one of the most lacklustre IPs of all time is just damned silly.

Still, if it makes you happy

While I sort of understand this, I'd like to point out you're describing PC game development as a whole too, Particularly every FPS.

I like Zelda I always took it as an introduction to adventure gaming; a gateway drug to better highs.

That's pretty much how all advances in games happen, designers tend to stick to the familiar as it allows designers the ability to test new features against a functioning system; otherwise you have to follow the more riskier option of trying new stuff with no backdrop to test it against.

---

I'm a big advocate for narrative and gameplay; i like shit to look pretty but id much prefer a story I can enjoy rather than a super specular map or something.

For example; It's like film. the original Clash of the Titans was awesome, but yet, the effects have clearly dated, but that doesnt stop the story being a twisted dick better than the new remake that is all green screen, cgi shit with an overindulgent story line - oh plus "converted" to some shitty form of 3D (3D being shit anyway).

I went to a games exhibition at the london science museum a few years ago, and do you know what the two most fun games i played there were? (Dont forget - this was about the time guitar hero was kicking off and GTA4 hadn't been released yet) it was Pong, on a massive screen, using the original technology and Super Mario Kart on the snes. Now, i dont say Pong to sound cool because i like the old skool blah blah, it was genuinely fun, and my gf at the time got her ass kicked... then later i got mine handed to me in mario kart ^^

Point is, if its fun, then its a good game, doesn't matter what its wrapping is like..

Now that I would debate forever, not least because you used the term "PC gaming". While "corridor shooters" can indeed be pitiful things, they are entirely the product of the most evil electronic device ever created: the XBOX. Thanks to the endless stream of feculent garbage produced by such overrated hacks as Bungie and their ilk, FPSs have now gotten a very bad name. Sure there have been some real stinkers over the years but for the most part they are still good and I still hold the FPS as being my favourite genre by far.

Accusing PC gaming development to be in the same situation as Nintendo is just unfair. Gaming development has taken a HUGE nose-dive in quality since the shitbox 360 came to be the lead platform but the PC is still producing the best games around for my money.

Errr...yes and no. I'll go out on a limb and say you've not played many if any Zelda games, balls? The thing is when I say they are the same I do not mean it lightly. All Zelda games are utterly identical. You play the same hero on the same quest for the same reasons and your adventures follow the exact same route and order. In every single game. In each dungeon you receive the same items in the same order and they look and perform exactly the same. In every...single...game. You meet the same characters who have the same needs and the same quests, you adventure in the same temples with the same names, you recover the same artefacts in the same order in the same way from (virtually) identical bosses. IN. EVERY. FUCKING. GAME.

The level of repetition between iterations of Zelda really has to be seen to be believed. While some games reference the ones that came before them, maybe paying a brief homage here or offering a similar idea/theme/setting there, Zelda just lifts the old game wholesale into the new engine and changes the fucking name.

Gears of War is by far the best game of the past 20 years in my honest opinion, and that couldn't have been possible without the Winbox 360.

Sorry i wasn't referring to zelda (good guess, but i did play one version of zelda on the snes i think, but its not really my thing, i like games with balls),

but game design and the progression of that design, most of the time is done in small steps. Which you can see a lot more easily within the FPS genre. And how its progressed from wolfenstein to crysis, but essentially not much has changed if you think about it; not that im complaining, ive enjoyed the 15 years of awesome games :)

Dammit, McMoist. I can never tell if you are joking or not!

Assuming you are serious for mo though: no, GoW was a PC game in its innitial stages so we would not only have still gotten it, we would have gotten a better version.

As to it being great, I would respectfully have to disagree. I love the Ueng3 without question and I think the game looks great. I also like the story and the characters it has, they were more entertaining than most. My problem with GoW is that if you play 20 minutes of it, you've seen the whole game. Because of the cover system, every single fight was rendered identical. You run into a spawn point, wait for the mobs to jump out of the ground, take cover and slug it out for 10 minutes. Wash, rinse repeat. If a cover mechanic had been added to a game as an extra feature, another option to be used or not as the gamer saw fit, then I would be all for it, but the issue was that when playing GoW you HAVE to use it at all times as the game is pivoted around it.

This is the issue with the XBOX - its s console, running low power hardware and using joypads for control but it thinks its a PC. I have no issue with consoles at all - I love them in fact - but consoles should have console games. FPS and TPS shooters are clearly jsut better on PC. The hardware is infinitely more capable thus giving us a better visual experience and the control mechanism (mouse keyboard) is so much faster and more precise that we get a far better combat system to boot. Due to the sluggishness and inherent inaccuracy of thumbsticks, any shooter made for a console has to be massively dumbed down and its action slowed. Take Halo as an example. When Bungie first wrote the game for PC (yes, it was on Apple to start with, but as an RTS) it had enemies and combat like any other game of the time. When they got bought out by M$ and were made to recode it for XBOX they found that the only way to make it playable was to put a 3 second delay into the enemy AI. 3 seconds! Cover mechanics, health regen, shields and all the other clutter we have now are simply a response to the inadequacies of consoles and the compensations that must be made in game design to counter them. Look the AVP and its utterly hysterical rock, paper, scissors combat for the most recent example of that!

But big headed jocks in space suits can be interesting too, no? This is an odd phenomenon that has developed over the last few years, mostly I believe thanks to arsehole reviewers like Kieron Gillen, that any game with overly macho characters in it cannot have a good story and must be mocked. I hear it time and again from reviewers and from gamers and yet if they are presented with a game about mechs or a game set in the Warhammer 40K universe they jizz their pants. Most odd... :?

Yeah, I was just kidding. Gears of War was alright while it lasted, but after finishing it, I had literally no desire to ever return to it. And I didn't. Still have it, never did return to it.

I won't rag on the 360 though. I got it for free with my mobile phone after a big period of simply not caring about games any more. And I'm not just talking consoles here, I'm talking all games. After the Dreamcast got royally stomped by the PS2, I pretty much lost any desire to buy any other consoles. Not to mention the fact I was completely off my rocker at the time and was far more concerned with going out and doing all sorts of ill advised shit. It doesn't leave a lot of time for gaming.

I digress however. I got the 360 as a 'free gift' and gave it a decent go. Oddly enough, the first game I got for it was Elderscrolls: Oblivion. A game that will have you rolling your eyes no doubt, since you probably hold the opinion that it should be a PC game only and the 360 ruined it. Fair do's, I won't argue with that. But you should know, that I would never have willingly picked up a game with Goblins, Knights and crap like that in it. I seriously hate all that stuff. You would have to tie me down, and snare me up like Alex from Clockwork Orange to get me to watch Lord of the Rings again. Or Willow. I played it however and ended up really enjoying it, and so I continued to buy games for it. I should point out, that my favourite games on the system are usually designed for consoles exclusively, and I own one FPS for it, which is Bioshock. Definitely one of my favourite games for it, but also a bit of a different experience as well. And if it makes you feel any better, I also bought it for the PC at a later date.

And please don't say anything about how it's just a copy of System Shock 2. I've never played System Shock 2, I don't intend to play System Shock 2. What's a System Shock 2?

But yeah. My favourite games on the 360 usually fall into two categories. Fantastic single player games or really good social games. And I don't mean Xbox Live. That shit's for the gays. I'm talking about actually playing with people in the same room. One of the main reasons I've owned any console. These include Dead or Alive 4, NBA Homecourt 3, Street Fighter IV. Shit like that.

And Dead Rising, as frustrating as it is, is a cracking little game I feel. Getting the true ending is a test of patience sure, but it's kinda what you'd expect from Capcom. And most recently, I've found Red Dead Redemption to be a fantastic experience both online and offline.

Anyway, I don't even know why I bothered typing all that.

Oh, and I fuckin' love Mario games. Nobody could convince me that they're anything but awesome. Playing Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, I must have looked like a kid who had been let loose in a candy shop...

...And given a really hot blowjob.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I had a point. Basically, if I hadn't got the Xbox, I might not have returned to gaming at all, and then I wouldn't have ended up here on SpA.

Then these fuckin' Minecrafters would be running riot!!

N64, GC and Wii. I used to go round my mates to play zelda on the NES and when the SNES came out too. I used to own a CDi but I don't anymore because I bought it off my brother and he then decided he wanted to borrow it and I never saw it again. So (as Meg Ryan put it so conveniently) YES YES YES
