"never released", yes it was, just not under the working title.

Vista also contains registry keys and files labeled "Longhorn" to go along with it

Interesting thing, but kinda misinformed. Most of those "unreleased" OSs are just the development code names for the ones that were released, not entirely separate products.

Whistler was released as XP and Longhorn was released as Vista. No big mystery here.
