Good for Anonymous! shame the fbi and justice dept sites are still up, but yeah.. fuck universal... massive money grabbing twats,..

and shame about mega upload, why the fuck do companies not learn from the whole Napster thing and instead of suing and arresting people, they take a step back and actually see what makes these models and systems so popular.

Personally, I have no issue with people downloading copyrighted material, and I don't see why anyone else should, their is no evidence that in affects lost sales, and this has been shown to be the case in many recent examples, in addition to studies that have been carried out before on piracy and declining cd sales, some which showed some evidence but none of those studies used actual file sharing data.

To also quote the big man;

Image
Quote:
In general, we think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. For example, if a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable. Most DRM solutions diminish the value of the product by either directly restricting a customers use or by creating uncertainty.

Our goal is to create greater service value than pirates, and this has been successful enough for us that piracy is basically a non-issue for our company. For example, prior to entering the Russian market, we were told that Russia was a waste of time because everyone would pirate our products. Russia is now about to become our largest market in Europe.

Very true what Gaben said there. Big budget media producers have always been greedy, and now that people don't have to tolerate their greed they're all in a big huff spewing money in every direction. Fucking MPAA aswell, they can go fuck, monopolising the rating system, they are literally that image of pigs eating money out of a trough.

Personally I avoid pirating thesedays, mainly because my university will without warning disable my user account, and internet access meaning it will screw the course up for me. Besides that though I will buy things, my favourite trojan compilations that are usually on sale, or Tarantino films, and well that's because I always value the things I buy, and keep on a shelf, more so than a jumbled playlist of downloads. When my vinyl player was working. I'd play my same few vinyls over and over, if I had them on my phones mp3 I would have just took them for granted, and not played them much at all, I had to write a big old dissertation concerning new media, but one of the points I mentioned we took the romance out of our cherished media by having almost an abundance of it.

They're going to win though, controlling online content, we're on a slippery slope, it could take anything from 20-50 years perhaps more, but they'll get it. They'll be blocking sites, calling for censorship and all sorts, they will be relentless until they can scoff every penny they feel they've been cheated out of.

I still buy stuff if it's good, but I going to download a piece of shit I would have never spent money on in the first place, so technically where is the loss? lol

yeah and you got a great example being the leaked wolverine movie, which was an incomplete cut without the CGI and that was one of the most downloaded films of that year (and the various film piracy bodies and studios were up in arms and wanted blood) but also went on to make 125m or something in the box office...

the guy who uploaded it got 2 years I think... the studios got free marketing and publicity, and 125m... also no one seemed to bother thinking how that film got out of the editing bay... did that guy lose his job?! did that come up in the news... i doubt it... because that would just show how feeble and dim witted they are.

This is why the music industry is also failing, not only are they only signing manufactured pop acts, but they refuse to adapt to the way things are going.
Gabe has the right idea with a valid reason behind it. ^^

The way I see it, If you download an album and like it enough, you go see the band live or purchase something from them. It's almost like a trailer for a film. Artists do not make much from album sales anyway after you take away all the costs and fees.

Another reason that album sales have gone down is because single sales have gone up like crazy compared to 5 years ago. It's like a packet of crisps. You buy a pack get some crisps (which would be the single) and you get the filler/air inside taking up most of the packet ( that would be the rest of the songs) ^^

I think one of the reasons they're manafacturing bad musicians is something to do the way we consume music. Before you'd have to save up for the records, and you'd really get into the artist, their quality stuff, try and catch them doing a gig. So many people have carried their music from youth to their graves, really appreciated it. Now today people go through songs like condoms because of new media, the music industry is just pumping out terrible mediocre stuff which will sell before consumers move onto the next thing, and then it wont matter or exist. I mean can you really see Lady Gaga or some group like the Sugar Pussies having compilation albums on mass sale in 30-50 years time? Nope, not a chance, tomorrow's youth wont be picking up todays rubbish, like we would with perhaps The Kinks, The Clash, Jimi Hendrix or Bob Marley and there's a good chance that this generation wont remember what they use to listen to.

So yeah I mean that's what I think is happening, it's a series of samey quirky stuff they're just throwing out there for short glory, for money. People are only going to forget about it anyway, so it's produced as if it were an assembly line for disposable products.

Well, I agree with all that's been said, with piracy being a service problem and stuff.

On the other hand the megaupload people were greedy bastards, paying people to upload illegal stuff. I guess I am kinda ok with sites being taken down whose founders encourage people to pirate stuff in order for them to profit from the illegal stuff. (e.g. Kimdotcom)
If it's a normal filehoster, that I think it's a bad approach.

Famous internet musician Jonathan Coulton also wrote a nice post that's definately worth a read. He wrote it after a twitter comment sparked a discussion:
Jonathan Coulton wrote:
Any other musicians out there notice that ever since they shut down MegaUpload, the money has just been POURING in?

I think people will buy things, it's just that we haven't yet been given a business model for film and music that caters properly and in a better way than downloading something illegally.

[*]Megaupload Closed – Owner get Jailed

[*]Wupload is smart early closed its "Affiliate Program"

[*]Fileserve removed it’s affiliate page, because USA/FBI thinks that a legal part of their TOS is not enough to protect them, where users are responsible for their own content, and not filehost itself. Also, their thread disappeared from WJunction.

[*]FileJungle Deleting Massive Files and still not paying its affiliates (Same Owner of Fileserve)

[*]Uploadstation same owner of Fileserve and same as Filejungle

[*]Filesonic closes it’s affiliate program (You can no longer download files unless you own them)

[*]Filepost started suspending accounts with infringing material and not yet paying members

[*]Uploaded.to not available in U.S. anymore Banned US IP

[*]Videozer – No affiliate/make money page

[*]EnterUpload Redirecting to Luxury.Net

However, the world’s second largest file sharing website Rapishare said in a recent interview that “File hosting itself is a legitimate business.” and that “We’re not concerned or scared about the raid”. So far, SendSpace and MediaFire haven’t made any move regarding this matter either

Future : You cant share files - only your own non.copyrighted shit...We will see loads of cloud services soon such as Apple´s cloud etc.
So it back to seedbox and private trackers :4
