Hey folks,

I encountered a problem after buying a reserved slot last week. You need to call the console to enter the connect-command, but I couldn't start the console in the TF2 main menu. So I connected to any fancy server, called console, entered connect and then finally could use my reserved slot. Is this stupid or is it me?

Cheers
Blackhawk

It depends on your keyboard language I think.

I can't open the console either in the menus.

To counter this, open up your "Games" pane in Steam, rightclick team fortress 2, select "Properties", and find "Launch Options". In here you type in "-console". Now, whenever you load TF2, you will have the console active at the menu screen!

Ok... IIRC I had some issues with "wrong" keys in the menu. So if it's based on the language setup, this would make sense... also Valve could have thought about this.

Thanks for the tip with the launch option. I'll try this when I buy reserved slot the next time.

Of course you know that you can bind the console command to any key you desire if the default one isn't working? =)

bind "any_key" "toggleconsole"

You think that's stupid?

I've purchased a reserve slot TWICE and got pissed off cause I thought I'd been ripped off. I didn't realise it needed to be activated through the developer console. I was just trying to access the servers the usual way.

What a waste of points...

Hmmm... What do you mean by "that's stupid"? I don't want to sound rude but if you want to blame anyone then blame yourself...

There's a neat little page called, attention, "SPA POINTS INFORMATION" on the SpA site and if you bothered to read it you'd have found the following piece of information:
Quote:
With these points you can:

* buy a reserved slot (How-To: Use Your Reserved Slot)
* buy the permission to use your spraypaint
* set the next map that should be played on the server
Clicky, clicky on the linky and you get an absolutely fool-proof guide to using the reserved slots... I mean, that's basically "Internet 101"...

I don't have an "any_key" on my board...

I like it where it is (on ^). It's working ingame, but not inmenu. So it's Valves fault if they don't load the locale in the menu. But would it work, if I put the command on a key which doesn't get screwed up by locales?

Yeah, that's what I'm hinting at. By default the console is NOT bound to "^" but to "`" which is probably somewhere else on your keyboard. I'm using the German keyboard layout very often (as a translator) but I couldn't ever be bothered to find out where all the special characters are hiding - I always switch to the US (or the identical Polish programmer's layout) keyboard to insert them. ;-)

Anyway - the easiest way without having to re-bind anything is probably doing what Spike suggested. I always append -console to my launch options anyway. (Also -noforcemacc -noforcemparms to prevent friggin' Windows from altering my mouse settings (like acceleration) and -novid to skip the annoying intro. =)

What you on about Lim-Dul? I realise the stupidity of what I done, that's WHAT I was saying. And I DO blame myself. I was replying to Blackhawk when he wrote 'Is this stupid or is it just me?' I was merely sharing a little anecdote.

So you can keep your condescending replies to yourself next time, regardless of whether you're trying to sound rude or not.

Ah - then I simply misunderstood you. ^^

I thought that "You think it's stupid" was like a short form of "Don't you think that's [the way you're supposed to use reserved slots] stupid?". I guess I've been hanging out on forums filled with Americans using ghetto-English for too long. ;-)

I was going to say something the first time it happened but because the points system was relatively new and I thought you might still be ironing out the kinks so I just left it.

The second time I was genuinely miffed but once again, I just left it. Can I have my points back though cause I'd like to buy a reserved slot and actually get to use it for this weekend.

Will you refund the 70 points I spent on buying a reserved slot for a week (I think my subscription is still active =) one day before I was admitted to SpA as well? ^^
I want to spend them all on ctf_convoy because I love this map. :-P

But... you know - I pressed the key by accident, yes, that's how it was... And... uhm... it's all because of this double-press bug and all... It's the truth, I swear! *crossesfingersbehindhisback*
