Hey there... have you installed the newest driver and such stuff? Have you checked the sound config in windows? It could be a problem with the sound-through-HDMI-feature the 3xxx and 4xxx support. So perhaps he's trying to put the sound through the ATI and not through your regular sound output.

What's your sysconfig and what was your prior gfx card? How much RAM has the 3870? Does the oom come when the games are loading or crashing back to desktop when they are running?

my system is:

Windows Home NL
AMD x2 5000+
2gb RAM @ 800mhz
Ati 3870 @ 512 mb (but dxdiag makes it apear at 1gb)
C-media sound card codec

my prior vga card was a 8500GT

and the error occurs when playing or loading the game, it crashes back to desktop giving that error

Did you propperly de-install your old graphicscard before installing?

Could you do as well:
start -> run -> dxdiag
then go to the Display tab, run those tests, and see if it gives any usefull results

Hmm... strange thing. Perhaps try to de- and reinstall a current DirectX package. Normally you wouldn't need a sys-reinstall with new gfx, but it won't hurt if you can do this step. ;)

disable the hdmi sound throughput from your vid card in your device manager list on your pc, that's what i did cuz i didn't use it anyway and i foresaw a conflict with that.

Sometimes you need to update the Windows Update function itselves. Have you install SP3? Now and then you hear of different problems with it.

Normally Windows states on his own if the updater needs an update.

Nah it doesn't. :-P

I bet you couldn't quickly come up with 5 valid reasons why Vista sucks. =)

not for super users
again, not for super users
it's built totally shut, you have to agree to things by clicking on ok buttons a million times before you can launch your shit (and don't tell me this ain't true, i've ran vista)
run punkbuster as administrator... Run as administrator??? I fucking wanna run everything as administrator, as for I AM MY COMPUTERS ADMINISTRATOR :S
Windows vista is the new windows me.

Here you go, 5 reasons!
If you don't agree on this being 5 reasons by the fact they overlap quite a lot and next to that you don't seem to agree on these reasons to be significant shows your just not an end user, sorry :P
Nothing wrong with that, but just don't start telling the pros how things work :4
You don't see me giving advice on figure skating either, right? :P

Mwahahahhahahahaha

Vista rampage war ftw!
