As we all could read, our webserver/gameserver MrWhite is not really performing they way we had intended.
A recent failure on an upgrade has set me to think, and i've decided i've had enough of MrWhite.
We origionally upgraded the webserver from some old P4 system to a C2D system equipped with desktop hardware.
This gave us like 4 times more power. For a while this seemd enough, but currently we're already running out of room on the server as we're facing a heavy increase in traffic on the machine as more and more people find their way to our website, forums, stats, voicecomm tools etc etc.
The origional problem haunting us is a failing PSU in the webserver. Sometimes when the load gets too much, the PSU overheaths and makes the server stall. And attempt to solve this issue, by upgrading the PSU failed misserably because some complete moron figured 10CM exit cables from the PSU would be sufficiant lenght to connect all the devices on....
So with this extra problem, i've come to the following decission. I'll personally fund an upgrade of MrWhite, so we won't have to use the donated money for this (We're saving up the donations to buy a replacement server for MrBlonde, est. costs around 2000,-, we're currently around 600,- away from reaching that target).
I'll be ordering the following mobo, specially designed for servers;
http://www.tyan.com/product_board_detail.aspx?pid=591
And on this mobo we'll fit a shiney Intel Xeon Quad-Core X3350 2.66GHz/1333MHz (12MB/45nm)
Everything will be equipped in a new case along with a new PSU. We'll be using the memory of the current server as its first class memory, 4GB DDR2 4-4-4-12. Also we'll take the HDD from the old machine to the new machine (a raptor 10k disk). Theoreticly we should be able to perform this upgrade without needing to re-install the OS on the server, leaving all systems in tact.
More info will be posted as soon as the ordered stuff will arrive at my place.
