This is horribly uninteresting - but I have just ordered a new, faster hard drive at last.

Western Digital AAKS 640GB - now I can load TF2 maps roughly 5 seconds faster than before! :4

All HDD manufacturs are the same in regards to reliability. Its all down to personal experiences.

For example, "Person A" buys a Seagate drive which fails after 2 weeks - he will never buy Seagate again and will tell all of his friends not to.

The same thing happens to "Person B" who buys a Western Digital drive - he tells everyone else that WD drives are unreliable.

Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung, Hitachi etc are good manufacturers.

I have a 2GB (yes, two gigabyte) Western Digital from 1997 that still works! I also have a 6 year old 40GB WD drive that works fine too.

I find it is just pot luck with hard drives. Depends how lucky you are!

Pretty much true - but having been building PC's commercially and fixing them for well over a decade, I'd give the "Unreliability Award" to Hitachi / IBM.

They are well known to have the most problem and the amount of faulty Deskstars and new Hitachi drives that have gone through my hands is obscene!

actually no.....

sorry to dissapoint you jinja_ninja,

but after three years of working with large serverfarms I can actually say I know something about this..

the worst kinds of problems we had was with western and Hatachi.. oh god hatachi, okay they got pretty decent customer service which I was pretty happy about, since it was easy to deal with them.

BUT on the other hand, the reason for why they got quick respons, is probably because their hard drives seem to fail alll the time.. usually we had about 1-3 harddrives each week that we had to send in for replacing...

I we did try to use them in Angola too, but due to the heat they just failed even more often, which made us turn to western.

western seems to have a higher heat resistance, but also creates a lot more noise... something you might have in mind if you're an end user or care about such things... ;)

personally I like seagate the best

I must admit that the Hitachi/IBMs are the most failed HDDs that I have come across. They seem to be used a lot in Dell laptops etc.

Then there is Maxtor! Oh dear god they were pretty bad, but have picked up quite well since they were taken over by Seagate.

Yeah Maxtors have been very good lately, and they're improving for speed aswell. My 500 flies... Nearly literally. It has wings. Maybe thats redbull. Maybe I'm drinking too much redbull. Hence these posts :S
