I want a walking fridge.

I fear however that I would not be able to resist the urge to kick it over.

And then all my beers would be smashed.......

I completely agree! Heineken tastes like foamy dog urine (don't bother asking me how I know that). Not te be cocky (call it, chauvinism) but we have some of the best beers here in Belgium. We've got a massive beer culture and Westvleteren has been elected Best Beer (period!) by an international commitee. Costs €7 a bottle (25cl) and you can only get it from the monks who brew it at the abbey though . . .

Well that sounds brilliant but I think I'd rather just get a Heineken since it's a hell of a lot cheaper and is quite a bit easier to attain.

I don't want to have to go to Belgium every time I want a beer.

Hell... I don't want to go to Belgium at all.

Hey, you must have quite a few Heineken-alternatives in Scotland as well.
Heineken is indeed a piss-poor (pun intended) beer, water with bubbles and a bit of yellow color - I don't wanna know how it's made. ;-)

If their beer would seriously be so shit, it wouldnt be one of the biggest players on the world market of beer. You guys just think its shit because that beer the monks have brewed and only make 100 beers a year should taste so much better! You believe in it so much that it actually tastes better.

I don't drink beer much, because I hate bubbles! But all this stupid talk about stuff tasting crap, is just a social thing.
Not for me, I actullay have to drink heineken every now (some people i know actually drink it:s) and then and I must say it's really shit

this could mean 2 seperate fridges...

or, it could mean that the 2 had been rolled into 1
if that was the case, I would pretty much live in the thing, and travel the world my gigantic walkin' fridge.

Crovax - I would disagree with you. I mean - McDonald's is also the most popular fast food restaurant but you wouldn't say that their food is top-notch, even if you eat it every now and then.

Heineken got so popular because its taste is so bland and hence pretty neutral - if someone wants to quickly grab some beer for a party and doesn't know better he will simply "stick to the mainstream". It's hard to find out why Heineken got popular in the first place (perhaps the aforementioned universal appeal through blandness - a bit like McDonald's) BUT nowadays it's basically popular because it's popular - which isn't a paradox by the way. ^^

I'm also not of the opinion that you have to stick to some small underground breweries and/or immensely expensive stuff to get (quite) good beer - Hertog Jan in the Netherlands was acceptable to say the least (I checked that it's owned by the largest beer company in the world) and when I feel like drinking beer I usually get some Pilsner Urquell which comes from one of the largest breweries too.

Which ones do you like, Blackhawk?

I drank a lot of Jever and Warsteiner (I especially like the former) during a three-month stay in Germany a couple of years ago. Drank some Erdinger Weißbier for variety's sake and a shitload of Astra but only because it was so damn cheap in the bar at the dormitory I was staying at. ^^

Jever is great. Warsteiner not my taste. Veltins is great. Krombach is a little town 30kms away from where I was born, but i don't like it that much... the beer, not the town. Beck's is quite wide-spread in the region. Our local Wolters and Feldschlösschen are shit, but the latter brew also stuff sold als 5,0 which is ok. Bergbräu from the small town where my gf came from is also quite nice. The big Bitburger is ok... they have tasty mixes. Every now and then I like a Flensburger for the plopp-fun. From my hometown is coming Irle... but don't like it. Eichener is also nearby... don't like it, too. Bosch is some nice stuff... also nearby.

From this list I'd prefer Veltins, if I had to choose one... Jever would be close to that.

For international stuff... IIRC Heineken (didn't know it's from NL ^^) is the only one you can buy quite often and I really like Guinness and Kilkenny.

Imho it's always hard to describe attribute XYZ of a beer. For me either I like it or I don't like it. It's like cartesters talking about attributes of cars during testdrives I never could assign to a stupid piece of metal. ^^

I'm not saying you should get that expensive beer, nor am I saying you should come to Belgium to get our beers.
You know Stella Artois? Belgian.
It's not very popular over here because we have some better beers which are cheaper and easier to obtain.

I still swear to our good old Belgian beers but of course I still more than just appreciate some foreign beers.

Let's just conclude saying: 'De gustibus et coloribus non disputandum est'

I'm not much of a beer fan. I'm more into whiskey but Stella Artois is just awesome. Heineken is okay, I woun't make a fuss if I'm at a party and they're serving it.

You guys made it sound like its horrible

There are only a couple of beers I can stand more than 2-3 bottles from, and Heineken is not among them. So yeah its not the best, its rather watery but I just think the bubbles are a bit to overwhelming compared to the taste.

I just love how the logic is, beer X is crap, beer Y is great because of <Insert culture> <insert size of company> <insert some other social reason> but not because this beer has a much darker fuller taste for example.
Heh? But this is precisely what I'm saying. 0_o
I said that Heineken tastes bland - basically like water with bubbles. Alcohol doesn't add or substract anything from the taste in this case.
You're the one trying to shove all our opinions under the "anti-establisment" blanket. ;-)

Uhm - Crovax - I think you should first read the posts, THEN comment on them. ;-)
I don't think anybody but you actually mentioned culture/smaller is better etc. - I even pointed out that this is not necessarily true. Just to quote myself:
Quote:

What most beer-drinkers here have written is actually that Heineken isn't good because it tastes like horse piss. Ironically you were the one to bring up one truly "cultural" argument, claiming that if Heineken can't be bad because it's so popular (an argument I successfully countered =).

If you want more "flourish-y" descriptions of the horse-piss taste then you don't need to look farther than this site:

http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/heineken/37/

The reviews place Heineken in the bottom 8 percent of beers around the world. By comparison e.g. Pilsner Urquell, which like I pointed out is owned by the second largest beer corporation in the world (so much for "popular beer can't be good", "smaller is always better" etc.), is placed around the 70% mark.
