You just started a chain reaction that will result to the end of mankind.

No, seriously.. I've ran folding@home on my old work pc several months. Now that I was given a "new" machine, I forgot to get my details over. So I started a new one and just saw your post about it and decided to set up SpA group.

You have to complete one unit and wait for the update every 2 hours ( which comes with one hour downtime :ugly: ) to appear in the list.

You can put the same stuff you see here.

I will join the group via the PS3 and via the PC.

Trying to work the GPU client but it stops at 0.495% all the time. It goes very fast before it gets to 0.495% then it just jams :(

Left it on overnight and it started working. 8)

It calculates protein folding, something that happens a lot and in a very small amount of time naturally. It's so complicated though that for us to emulate the folding it takes days:

Gah i write that then I find all the info:
Quote:
It's amazing that not only do proteins self-assemble -- fold -- but they do so amazingly quickly: some as fast as a millionth of a second. While this time is very fast on a person's timescale, it's remarkably long for computers to simulate. In fact, it takes about a day to simulate a nanosecond (1/1,000,000,000 of a second). Unfortunately, proteins fold on the tens of microsecond timescale (10,000 nanoseconds). Thus, it would take 10,000 CPU days to simulate folding -- i.e. it would take 30 CPU years! That's a long time to wait for one result!
Quote:
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Quote:
Protein folding is linked to disease, such as Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
So it's pretty important stuff ;)
