Here's some local Dutch music for you lot. It's a group called "doe maar", they were and still are very popular. Most of their songs originate from the 80's. They are the best (original) Dutch reggae/ska(or something like it) band. :26 :-11

This song is a sort of protest song as you had them a lot in the 80's. The mail line in the song is "voor als de bom valt", "before the bomb drops". About the fear of nuclear bomb attacks at that time.


This song is about one of the things which makes our country very well liked around the world, "Nederwiet" (Dutch-weed). You'll notice this especially from the slow singing and tunes in this song, love it :mrgreen: (most peoples favourite song)


This song is called "is dit alles", "is this everything". Song is about the daily slur people get into a lot when living life.


The following song is about being 32 and in love, singing about her being his girl (and being very joyful about it)


A song about being alone for one night (1 nacht alleen), as he sings about always taking woman with him home.


A song about a girl which he likes, Belle and hadn't seen for a long time.

when growing up (at least for people my age i guess), there's that moment when you discover the hundreds of music channels on Sky, and for about a year afterwards you spend about an hour each day flicking through them in a quest to dodge the never-ending adverts and to find something that you actually wanted to listen to. until you come to the conclusion that said stations are composed predominantly of tripe. anyway, until i reached that point, i always stopped on this video. it wasn't because i particularly liked it - it probably had more to do with the fact that watching it made me feel... uncomfortable, i guess. if kids in primary 6/7 can be uncomfortable. it made me feel something anyway, this weird little video with all its different bits, its guitary bit and its rappy bit and the way that the bits somehow made the same song, standing out from an unending stream of rubbish hip-hop, generic chart singles and constant repeats of alien ant farm's cover of 'smooth criminal'. when you're ten years old, you pay attention to something like that without realising that you're doing it.

tonight, i watched it again for the first time in years. and you know what? i realised that the video is absolutely beautiful, visually and, if you like, as a bit of a metaphor. but it feels like more than that - that watching this thing over and over again when i was a kid, probably far more times than i realised, as it stood out from the channels of utter shit that i skipped over made me, somehow, recognise that what it was doing was a bit special. and i was a kid. i was a kid, and i sort of got it, and didn't realise it at the time, and ever since i've taken on board that message. i think i saw the crazy spinning room full of the scary men on the big screens, and the way that the dude with the megaphone pressed himsself against the glass longing to get out, and how he couldn't get onto windmill island no matter how bad he wanted too, and i pretty much internalised the poetry of it.

so, there you go. this thing was probably a massively influential thing in my life, and i didn't even realize it. this is alot of shit to write over that sort of realisation, and i'll probably look back and wonder why i bothered... but for now, it's kind of mindblowing that a music video that i haven't even thought about in, i dunno, eight years made such a difference. to me anyway.

and now we know a little bit more about each other, don't we? :26
