ahum... show off

Anyhow I have created the channel special attack in Eve Online.

You can contact me through steam when you are in Eve I will tell you what to do. I hope you lot will like it, its a game that starts of slow but is fun imho.

Also for when you create your character
Perception and Intelligence are rather important, they are the primary attribute for a lot of skills. The higher your attribute the less time you need to train it, other than that attributes have no effect on the proficiency of your character with a skill.

Memory and willpower are also nice, but usually are secondary skills

Charisma, well its the primary attribute for social skills etc but there aren't that many of them and you can safely neglect this attribute.

Why am I telling you this? Well at character creation you get to spend 5 points on the attributes, you can use these to erase some of the negatives about the character or boost its positives even more.

If you are planning on doing mostly combat, then Perception will be one of the most important attributes and willpower will be quite important as well. If you are planning on becoming an industrious character that mines stuff and builds stuff Intelligence will be the most important attribue and memory will be quite important as well.

I'd say start with a wellbalanced character that has at least 7 in every attribute but charisma.

How long ago was that? And yes it would be very stupid to learn learning skills alone.. its a good idea to learn them but dont let them spoil the fun of learning other stuff

Also 0.5 and higher wont have camps

Hmm, dunno if they had missions back then...

Anyhow, biggest mistake you can make is getting too obsessed with the learning skills. Learning them is good but the best way is to learn them all to 4-3 within the first 3 months.. and 4-4 after that. That way you can still benefit from them and also have fun getting other usefull skills

Well, I'm an rpg nerd so I spend time doing math about the points, skill rotation, whatever the game has. Seemed obvious to me I should start by maxing learning and then the stats. :P

Well, not really :P Learning all the learning skills from the start is very slow, and will not give you a proper income. Instead figure out whether you want to fight or produce . If you want to produce, max out Intelligence and perhaps also Memory. If you want to fight, max out perception and maybe also willpower. Then train yourself to produce or fly something that will earn you money, then return to the learnign skills. And don't train anything that has to do with Charisma.... It's a waste!

Train your "quick" skills while you know you will be online for a while. Train the longer skills when you will not be online until next day or even longer.

For those of you confused by the ship types, here is a short summary (from the top of my head)

Titan-class ships:
The titan of today is really only used for two things; a hit-and-run weapon and for logistics. The titan is the only ship capable of fitting a doomsday device. This device does tremendous damage around the ship, instantly killing anything close up to a battleship-class ship, given that the target is not fitted for doomsday survival, of the type fired (there are four different doomsday types: kinetic, explosion, EM and Thermal). The titan is also capable of carrying a transportable jump-bridge generator. This generator can generate a jump-bridge to a Cynoserul field in another solar system, making it possible for ships without their own jump-drives to access systems not using the normal gates.

Mothership-class carriers:
The Mothership is in reality only an oversized Carriers. A carrier is a ship capable of holding and fielding vast amounts of drones or fighters. Normally, a ship is limited to fielding 7 fighters at any given time (no non-carriers can fit 7 of the best drones in their drone-bay anyway). A mothership is usually only used for its offensive capabilities, although it's an excellent support-vessel also.

Dreadnaught-class ships:
A dreadnaught-clas ship is the backbone of any offensive fleet. Noone can match a dreadnaughts damage, especially not when it has entered siege mode.

Carrier-class ship:
As mentioned under "Motherships", a carrier can hold vast amounts of drones and fighters. But unlike the mothership, the carrier is usually praised for it's support-abilities. The excellent capacitor on the carrier, means that msot of them are used to repair other ships, while only using their drones and fighters as offense. A group of three carriers can keep eachother alive for a very long time during fleetbattles.

Battleship-class ship:
The battleship is the largest ship, not able to fit it's own jump-drive. It is also the largest ship (except for freighters) than can use a normal jump-gate. The battleship is used primarily for damage and tanking. The battleship is not expensive like any ships above it, but it can fit an excellent tank (for NPC'ing, exploring, etc.) and can deal out large amounts of damage. The Battleship is also the primary ship used against cyno-jammers (You cannot jump larger ships than the battleship into a cyno-jammed system).

Battlecruiser-class ship:
The battlecruiser is a small version of a battelship. The battlecruiser has a smaller powergrid and CPU than the battleship, and thus cannot fit as large modules. Bit fit correctly, a battlecruiser can easily tank 3 npc battleships as once.

Cruiser-class ship:
A small vessel, usually used as support (warp/target jamming)

Frigate-class ship:
The smallest ship-type. Not really capable of anything. It can be used to annoy the enemy though, if fitted with a jammer, since noone ever notices this small ship.

You should not go directly for a better ship, as the new ship type will have certain requirements in order to fit it properly. For example, if you are Caldari, and has just learned the cruiser-class ship, it's a waste to train for battlecruiser-class ships straight away, as you will need better skills in missile launcher operations and shield maintenance to fir the battlecruiser. Then it's better to learn the required missile-launcher and shield-maintenance skill first, since these will also give a boost to your current ship!

Think carefully before training for a better ship. If you enjoy running missions in high-security, you do not need a battleship. If you like doing courier missions, you don't need a heavy ship, but a smaller, lighter and faster ship is to prefer.

If your main interest is mining, just fit a mining laser to a badger until you can fly a mining barge with strip miners.

I'm back in. Apparently I did pretty good since the only things left for me in the learning tree is the rank 5 learning and some Charisma stuff. With a few level 1 implants I have 19 int, 17 percep, 16 will and memory. Now to get a hold of my friends, rob them of isk and start training for something other than my frigate. >.<

Well in response to the MMORPG critics and fans its pretty much the same argument you both put foward in different ways.

I love WoW. I can happily admit it - I love gridning reputation for a week of played time just to get the next epic. I love spending 4 nights a week slowly fighting and fighting on the same boss till finally your team gets it and you down him for one peice of measly loot between 25 of you. I love the feeling of smashing the faces of rly low levels in PvP and gloating mightily about how much of a dickhead I am. I love that I can play it for a week and get nothing done. But i also Hate it for the same reasons!

I love Warhammer Online, I dont get to play it atm since a) Wrath came out and b) my gfx card went pop. But I love it none the less. Its an MMORPG where they got rid of a good portion of the boring chore-like MMORPG features and just have the WAR and the leveling and the PvP and the beatings, However as it doesnt have the play it for 7 days just to get your one epic for exalted rep, or play it for a week just to down a boss it also looses its ability to keep me playing for longer than 2-3 hours at a time. Its a game where it should technically be FUN, and yet because its not a "job" its impossible to sink your time into it. In fact - funnily enough without the timesinks of WoW it also loses how much I can play it!

I cant say Ive played Eve and I probably never will, its universe doesnt really interest me, however im sure its the same as WoW - although it has some features which seem as "time sinks" to some, to others its the whole reason they keep playing, its what keeps people into the game and im sure gathering resources for a dayto build a shinier ship is epic when u actually get it!

So before we through the "judge" stick out there, remember, people play MMORPGS perhaps for the same reasons others dont and vice versa!

Piloting skills would insinuate moving :P Its not about the movement in combat at the moment, my ship just sits there shooting missiles. Ill probably get owned in the next level ones though so its a bit silly

All weapons have a range where they work ideally. I can't remember how to check it, since I am so used to my main character, I know exactly how long it's ideal range is with the different types of cruise missiles and torpedoes.
I think Crovax mentioned something yesterday about that you can rightclick your mods in space and get information about ideal range.
You should then try and keep the npc's at YOUR optimal range isntead of letting them fight at THEIR optimal range.
Another thing you gotta be careful with, when using missiles, is that missiles only have a certain velocity and flight-time (that can be somewhat boosted with skills), and multiplying these will give you a maximum range. Anything beyond this, and the missile will burn out mid-flight. I am saying this, because one of the most common rookie mistake is to open fire at large range, when the start range for missiles is somewhat small.
For cruise missiles, the optimal range is often outside your targeting range. In these cases, you need a sensor booster or two, possibly with a range script, in order to reach your optimal range!

As I remember it, it's not exaclty the range shown in the weapon's info screen since that range is also factored according to your and your target's velocity (like you just said :P ) and I'm pretty sure there was something else that was important, I just don't remeber what :P . I do however remember just testing various orbiting distances against a same NPC to see where my damage maximized.

There ARE lots of factors to take into consideration when firing a missile.
  1. The type and name of the launcher
  2. The missile velocity and flight time
  3. Your velocity and bearing according to the target
  4. Your missile launcher operation skills
  5. Any bonusses the ship might have towards missile operation
  6. The target's signature radius
  7. The target's velocity and bearing according to you
  8. Any secondary rigs you may have equipped
  9. Any augmentations and boosters you may have plugged in
Many of these have so small an effect, that you can just disregard them completely.
If you have tech I, unnamed missiles, you may aswell just fire as soon as your target is within range of the missiles, and keep firing until the target is dead. If you use faction ammo, and have multiple targets, you should start thinking about engaging your targets in an order that allows you to maximise the damage from the missile.
