Imho: black-on-grey = nogo

Perhaps something like the upper right box? Or something quite similar to the current design?

Since everybody seems to be posting criticism (which isn't bad, when combined with some motivation) I'd like to post some praise.
You did really well on the layout, regardless of color (the thing you guys shouldn't pick at because colors can be easily changed). The whole globe/agency briefing room theme looks really slick aswel. After some touch ups I wouldn't mind seeing that as the new web-layout at all.
Keep up the good work!

I still think the design shows good things, but somehow its just not it...

I'm curiouse for other people's work aswell, see if we might be able to put something combined together from differant designers.

See the "Login" and "Register" buttons up there? That bar? Rather use that.

While looking good is a critical issue for every site, being functional, easy to read, easy to navigate is even more important.

Big, huge header? Not needed. Plus, someone wandering into the site will spend some time before figuring what the site is about.

To be honest, the current site layout is the best possible. On top general community navigation, on left informative sites and on right live server stats. Using an all-white with shades as a general theme would be best - especially if the community is meant to grow from just 1 game. Color variations for each game/community/large parts of the site. For example, TF2 would have red-ish theme, COD4 green and CSS blue or yellow. Just as an example. Buttons like that are a no-no. It's not a webcomic page, it's not a gallery, it's not a place where botchy beef buttons will fit in. In the end, I would say this: If this site is supposed to grow and adapt, it needs a simple, recognizable look or theme. Also, the changing header picture is nice. It could be made just out of ingame screenshots.

Also, get a proper logo to be used everywhere. It doesn't have to be a kickass comic awesome styled site name, it could be just Special Attack with a specific font.

I rest my case.

TL;DR: Don't focus too much on the looks. If site gets beefed up, it will be ugly and it will pretty much scare new players right off. Keep it nice and sleek.

The login/register ban is spot on for me!
The banner is spot on (except the logo, which needs work).
I still don't like the menu that much.
I like the transparent background for the new items.
I would love to see the news headings made more catchy.
The "banner" between each news item is fine, if you make it match the banner a little better colour and transparency wise.

My advise would be to incorporate the "login/register" layout to the rest of the site.
Also, it should be clear that the site is a gaming community!

I know I promised Bucky some designs from me, but I am tied down atm. Netbyte.dk just requested some posters, member cards and shit, and I have to give them first-priority!

Also, I would love to see some designs, that incorporates the "news" banner you might find at sites like http://www.sporten.dk (The "news banner" is below the "Sas ligaen" bar. It shows the top 6 new posts, each with a photo and a short introduction)

Another example with a different layout is www.gamereactor.dk

Keep in mind that we do not want to code flash, so keep it simple, so that it can be done without flash :)

The only problem with Quattro's design is that its in a futuristic/outer space style which I don't think gets over the "cartoonish" style that TF2 was designed to be....in fact, I think the design is going to what the TF2 designers were trying to get away from. Im not critising the design at all, its very good, just the style with the game its trying to promote is not, IMO, matching

Not really :)

I'm gonna make a similar but new one tonight, i've been drawing some stuff @ work and am going to try to work it out tonight in illustrator or photoshop.

(yeah yeah logo design should always be done in illustrator, but in PS i can make it quicker :). If it is going to be the logo i can always create it in illustrator)
