compared to cp_labor I think it looks very nice. compared to cp_labor ANY map look nice. The few times I played it I didn't really get a chance to test the flow properly, but I assume they tweaked it before making it official. It looks a lot better Turbine, mach4 etc. |

Yep - people are FAR too quick to judge everything. One example: yesterday we played cp_freight_b3, ironically the new project of Fishbus, so the same guy. :-D It drew quite a few players to the server which surprised me since Spikespiegel and I were a bit reluctant to add it to the map cycle given its relative lack of popularity if judged only by downloads on FPSbanana... Anyways - Metalmcbiff, one of the top players on our server rated the map as "poor" after like 3 minutes, immediately after the info text about map ratings appeared. Then he went on to play a whole round on the map and reached 90+ points, so he said that he should probably change the rating now... As nice as it is on his side to change the rating, why did he give the map a "poor" score in the first place? Then, again, what does HIS personal score have to do with the appraisal of the map (it is, indeed, very nice - it could've been released by Valve, literally, it's a bit like cp_well)... I for my part don't have too many "favorite maps" and it would be very hard for me to compile any kind of ranking. There are so many awesome custom maps that are so different that I would put them all on the same level. cp_steel DEFINITELY deserves a spot among standard maps given its high visual and gameplay quality and once it becomes more popular players will start to get it. Remember how you first played TF2? I bet some maps were confusing to you as well... I found a passage on tc_hydro just several weeks ago I've been completely missing FOR MONTHS. ;-) P.S. bOse, really, you can dislike cp_steel but it being "ugly"? What the hell? It looks exactly like maps made by Valve and uses standard models and textures except for a few custom ones. 0_o |

And how many times did you play on cp_steel if I may ask? Recalling how you rated cp_science with a 1 after like 5 minutes of playing I'm reluctant to think you really have some good arguments why this map sucks so bad. ;-) |

Nah - it seemed to be faring better and better the longer people played it. At the end of the Custom Map Weekend it was receiving a boost in scores of like 0.2-0.3 each time it came up. =) |

I completely disagree with you this time...<3 Ontopic: cp_steel is quite a fun map to play xD As for cp_steel, the only thing which is 'wrong' with it is it's complexity... it takes some time before you know what happens when you capture a control point. As for me, I know that A opens a door, and that various others add bridges to the middle point, but other then that I still haven't got a clue about which changes happen... which I think is the power of this map.... it keeps surprising.. then you capture a point and come to the conclusion that you really benefit from it. The other control point maps, for example take dustbowl, they only add additional time, if the red team keeps pushing you still will not get any further then merely the first point. ... my 3 cents |

I'll admit I didn't like freight when it came up yesterday and rated it rather poorly. A rash decision as once the layout became a bit more clear to me I realised that there were actually at -least- two ways to any given cap on the map. Lots of nooks and crannies and ambush-spots. If cp_steel holds up to that standard I think I'm in for a treat! |

Then, again, what does HIS personal score have to do with the appraisal of the map (it is, indeed, very nice - it could've been released by Valve, literally, it's a bit like cp_well)... Just so I don't come across as a -complete- douche, I feel I should just explain that my score didn't have anything to do with my comment about "Oh I should probably change my rating now". As I played the map I started enjoying it more and more. What turned me off at first completely was the resemblance to Well (which I -loathe-), the endless trains, fairly long distances to the caps (initially at least), and that there are all these tunnels leading off from the start which really don't have an indication of where they lead. At least I didn't see one. Once I got over that hurdle, and it really was a hurdle for me, I started realising that the map is structured in a far more compelling way than your average player-generated map. There's nooks, crannies, short roads, long roads, underwater passages and overhead ones that give everyone an excellent opportunity to surprise and ambush the opponents as well as directing them towards a specific point on the map. I said "I should probably change my rating now" in what was meant as an ironic manner seeing as I clearly did rather well on a map I early on stated I didn't care for at all. In retrospect I can say I was hasty in my judgement of the map itself and even if I got whooped it'd still get rated higher. I definitely couldn't class it as "Easy to learn" though, which I think otherwise characterizes most TF2 maps. On freight I actually did get a bit lost at times (especially at the start) which is an instant minus for me. I rated it in accordance to what my impressions were when I got prompted to do so and immediately got called an idiot. When I admitted I was probably both hasty and harsh in my rating, I was called stupid. The player can change his/her rating of the map retroactively and I'm inclined to do so the next time it comes up, but I absolutely resent the notion that I'd somehow lack the testicular fortitude to rate a map after how I think it plays instead of whatever score I end up with. |

Post subject: | Re: cp_steel: New official map |
Very nice and detailed feedback, McBiff. ^^ I didn't mean to bash you - I just (ab)used you as the most recent example of this behavior I could bring up. You can change the ratings at any time by typing !maprate or /maprate (silent trigger) by the way and view ANY map's ratings with !maprating (/maprating). I believe the above post would qualify to be split from this topic and moved into the Custom Maps & Development section to its own topic as exemplary feedback on a map. =) P.S. The trains on cp_freight_b3 are quite fun and indeed long. They move veeeery slowly so it's a real embarrassment when you get run over by them. They add a new tactical element to the gameplay, however. They pass the map in two places and the author added the possibility to jump over them for one team, otherwise they can cut off a vital CP from all but Soldiers or Demomen. It's also noteworthy that in concordance with the map's name and theme Fishbus made the trains move with containers on the carts in one direction and with empty carts in the other. :-D |

You can already catch a glimpse of cp_steel on all our main servers by buying it with SpA points. =) I wonder if Valve helps the devs to further polish their maps since the last version of cp_steel was only Beta4... |

The unlockable for the Heaviest pugilists out there is the K.G.B. Any time a Heavy kills an enemy with the K.G.B he receives five seconds of guaranteed critical hits. This crit-boost can be used to punch and kill further enemies, extending the boost time. Alternatively, the Heavy can switch to another weapon and use the boost to take out an enemy at range. The Heavy's slow movement speed, and the K.G.B's slower swing speed, make it a risky prospect. |

The achievements sound damn funny to those in-the-know... Like people living in countries from the ex-communist block. =) P.S. So I think the rumors about the second unlockable being a sandwich are true. I imagine that it will be like a portable medkit, which would be awesome since the main weakness of a Heavy without a Medic is NOT a lack of healing during an attack but a lack of healing and retreat options AFTER the attack. I can kill 3-4-5 players without a Medic any day but then I will be at like ~20 hp and/or burning and probably dead (or bored ;-) before I make it to the next medpack... |

Although I'm not one of the people who say that you CAN'T make fun of Hitler etc. I wonder why Americans (read: Valve) have no problems naming stuff after Stalin who probably killed more people than Hitler, while Nazi Germany is more or less a taboo. :-\I wonder what people would say if someone made achievements named after Osama Bin Laden or an achievement called 9/11 where you had to crash planes into buildings in some games... We all know that they even removed PLANE CRASHES from SimCity... (I'm talking about Stalin the Kart) |
