Okay, now that I've had a run through the characters' moves, playing with the keyboard is only okay from some players. :P Ryu and Viper have easy to pull moves and if you're fast on the fingers you can mask them well enough. But trying to play Dhalsim or Chun-Li, ouch.

Post subject:  Re: Street Fighter IV

Jesus Christ. I've been playing in the Championship Mode and it seems like every fucker that plays in it is just a spamming bastard!

I just fought three different Zangief's that do nothing but the Lariat. And most annoyingly, Akuma's that do nothing but run away and spam Air and Ground fireballs. I mean come on here, the games not supposed to be like this! They don't give each character all those moves so they can spam the same one over and over.

I really feel like I'm in a 'If you can't beat them, join them situation' but the fact of the matter is, I don't want to do that. I have no interest in this shit. It's just plain boring for fuck's sakes. I doubt I'll continue to play SFIV on the PC frankly, if this is the kind of competition I can expect. It's utterly pathetic and I really don't see how anybody gets any kind of enjoyment in playing like that.

Post subject:  Re: Street Fighter IV

I agree on Lariat and Air-Fireball spammers - these two characters have a wide array of tactics available at their disposal.

However, some characters are designed in such a way that they simply can't use certain moves unless they want to lose. Guile and M.Bison (Dictator) spring to mind immediately. In Guile's case you can't use the Flash kick outside of combos or wake-up situations anymore because it has ridiculously low priority and low horizontal range - in fact Guile players now use his cr.HP as an anti-air exclusively. The same is true for M.Bison - his Psycho Crusher is now utter crap and hence most Bisons stick to the Double Knee Press exclusively.

And you know - if these are player matches then there's indeed no reason to play the game in a visually pleasing way. However, in ranked matches I wouldn't really criticize players trying to win. In e.g. in Akuma's case in a match-up with Zangief Air Fireballs are pretty much the only sure-fire way to win and the only reason why Akuma is a 4-6 fight for Zangief...

BTW You said how Cammy was an Anti-Zangief? That I kinda don't understand - it's her absolutely worst match-up with 3-7. I find matches against players using the same moves over and over again quite an educational experience because that makes me rethink my own tactics if I lose. I try to find some videos of how pro players deal with those situations or experiment with normal and special moves to see if they have a higher priority than their spam-move. It's even more rewarding in that there are A LOT of players using pattern-tactics online so if you find their weakness, you found a weakness in like 80% of the online community. ;-)

Fights against better players are also enjoyable - I learned quite a few tricks from them. E.g. without them I wouldn't know that you could go from a blocked Tetsu directly into a throw as Ryu or how his cr.MK poke works.
The gameplay experience as Sagat is especially enlightening because his worst match-up is 5-5 so you don't have any excuses when you lose - you can only blame your tactics. E.g. I lost to a Honda with over 1000 BPs recently because he knew the match-up and the usual pattern for Sagat - the lesson I learned - don't rely on Tiger Shots when he's in Body Slam slam range, keep him at bay with well-spaced Tiger Knees instead and use low Tiger Shots only to punish blocked Headbutts. ^^

Final word: don't hate the player, hate the game. I really blame the prevalence of certain cheap tactics on Capcom. I mean - SFIII was NOTHING like that.

Post subject:  Re: Street Fighter IV

Well I never said anything about whether I won or lost. The truth of the matter is, I win just about every match I play. Admittedly some are easier than others but for the most part, it's enjoyable.

I usually only play Ranked matches, but if I come up against somebody I particularly enjoy playing against then I'll add them to my friends list and suggest we play some more matches. Especially if they play as a character I have some difficulty with, then it's good sparring territory. As for Cammy, well I was probably a little premature when I said that. The truth is as long as I keep my distance, she'll usually come to me then it's Goodnight Irene.

The guys I played with, the spamming Zangief's and Akuma's were in the Championship Mode so they were definitely playing to win. So was I though, I just didn't feel it necessary to resort to bullshit tactics to do so. Hell, I could have just mirrored the Zangief players. If I pulled off my Lariat a second after theirs, I'd knock them down. Like I said though, that's just not my way. Mainly cause it's simply no fun.

Very, very important note if you play online!

Apparently some of the online problems can be reduced by setting the framerate to fixed in the options. When you set it like that the game will always "pretend" to be running at at least 60 FPS and will skip frames if one player is too slow.

Sadly it's not on by default AFAIK and that's what makes for horrible, horrible gameplay.

Is it just me or is Rose a really really versatile character? Sure, not many combos but lots of moves for different stuff + the ultra is just awesome in terms of dmg and how easy it is to set up. I like her the best so far. ^_^

Post subject:  Re: Street Fighter IV

Yeah, sadly she has below average health and her moves have quite long recovery and/or start-up so she really has problems with some of the higher tiered characters.

But hey - overall SFIV is so well balanced on the level normal people are playing (we're not talking about pros where a 1% difference in effectiveness might mean a world) that you can pretty much use whichever character suits you best.

Well, right now I'm using an..errr...evaluation copy of SFIV but I'm gonna buy it this week and I'm really looking forward to playing with her online. ^_^

Btw, any tips on approaching turtle characters like Guile and Honda?

edit.
Okay, what attack do they mean there?
Image
Because I've linked the punch with all of her exes and that didn't work. :<

editedit.
No, wait, I got it now, it's FOCUS attack. xD

Don't jump forward unless very far away, use your poke attacks to move forward on the ground, if you need to jump over a projectile jump straight up with a high-priority attack to prevent a counter-jump-in. You can of course punch Honda out of his headbutts with LP. When you're close you can do a Focus Attack Dash Cancel to move in and then it's usually quite hard for these characters to recover. Ah - and don't stand close to the enemy's "corpse" on wake-up or you'll usually get a Flash Kick in the face (or Headbutt). When Honda keeps spamming his Smash/Slam or whatever it's called move you absolutely HAVE to use light punches and kicks to punish it since any other moves come out too slowly. A lesson I learned with Sagat. ^^

Gosh, why is my laptop so crappy. I wanna fight with you guys...
Btw, I've read on many places that Sagat is a bit overpowered compared to other characters.
At least that's what some sites were stating.
So please don't hit me with a wall of text Lim! :D

Post subject:  Re: Street Fighter IV

I'll keep it short - yes, Sagat is the only character that is overpowered and balanced less than the others. That's why I'm using him - ha, ha. Still, it's not an insta-win situation.

The problem with Sagat is: his moves, especially the Tiger Shots, have too little recovery time (he's able to out-shoot EVERYbody in the game), some have too little build-up too (Tiger Knee) and too much priority in the beginning (but this requires timing). He also has too many hitpoints and hits too hard. Ah - I forgot to mention that he has an immensely powerful Ultra that is also very easy to set up if you train a bit.

If you want to know more about tiers I recommend this site:

http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2008/oc ... -rankings/

Keep in mind that the tiers apply mostly to pro-level gameplay and sometimes still mean jack shit - as evidenced by TWO El Fuertes winning TWO major tournaments in Japan back-to-back (I posted Tetsu's vids, now it was TKD's turn to take that baby home :-D).

Funny how they gave all that to Sagat whereas Akuma for eg is a glass cannon. :P

And I've found my Rose player idol:

He has 70something videos, lots of stuff to learn there. ^_^

Shaaaaddaaapp! :-P

But yes, it's true - I locked Lim Dul as an old non-Live account and apparently these can't be converted. However, I can't really be blamed for that - I set up that profile when I was reviewing Halo 2 for the PC, the first Games for Windows enabled game EVAAA, BEFORE it was even out so I couldn't have predicted which direction this system will be taking. Of course both the offline accounts and online accounts use the same nickname database. FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU GfWL!

Oh and I'm still having problems with the control... either my new gamepad is crap (Logitech Rumble 2 thing... should not be crap) or the game has weird input control. While I get all the normal moves now (more or less), the superultramegagiga stuff still fails. At least the move for e.g. Guile's Ultra Flash Kick... only got it working once in training mode after lots of tries. Same for the move ya need for Honda. Comparing these moves to QCQC for Ken's ultra... dunno... quite weird in my eyes... :ugly:
