It's actually made almost purely of maple sap. The sap is very sugary because the tree has stored lots of starch in the winter, which gets converted to glucose as it rises through the stem in the sap.
After it's been tapped it gets reduced to become more gloopy and sugary. Hardly anything is added.

that's why most of the bottles say 100% maple syrup and don't have an ingredients list, and that they come in different grades of consistency and strength.

im not sure about added water, because the process of refining the sap is evaporating it, but im not 100%.

I am 100% sure that you should not my imitation syrup, stuff called "pancake" syrup etc or maple flavour etc... Get the expensive Grade A shit

You are actually completely misunderstanding me :5:

The water is in there when it's in the tree, but after being reduced, it isn't. The other chemicals I talk of aren't added, they are in the sap already, giving the syrup flavour it is famous for, along with the sugar; which it mostly consists of.

Any it's not actually known what compound gives the unique flavour, as there are different minerals, acids, volatile organic compounds.
