is the freebuild server down right now?
i cant find it on the WOM client or the minecraft.net page...

There is a simmilar problem with SMP, it says connection time out :(

most likely some technical issue with the hosting company. we'll just have to wait for the guys let us know whats happening.

SMP may or may not be down. However, until Bukkit updates to 1.5, there will only be a temporary map on SMP.

And Bukkit has said 'wah wah wah unstable' so the new craftbukkit won't be out for some time. Get nice and cozy.

The machine that Minecraft is on is running VMWare (on Linux) with two guests - one Linux and one Windows.

Maybe in the future we should leave the server up in whatever version it's currently in until we know FOR SURE Bukkit has an update. As long as people don't update immediately, they can still work on their wonderful castles and such in the SMP server.

In the meanwhile, I think its time to finish my Pokemon Intro with noteblocks...

The temp maps also allow people to experiment with new features in a new setting. We usually leave them on for about a week, or in this case, until I have enough time to do the full update process.

New and exciting features, like non stop griefing and theft with no repercussions. With PVP off they just look at you and laugh.

Yes, I know it's a temp map. I once thought it maybe was a good idea to let everybody run amuk, get it all out of their system so they can behave on the real map. BUT... the same people who are buttholes on the real map are buttholes on the temp map, so it's only a field day for them because no pvp, no cops, so it's all quite pointless.

in my opinion, we either need a good police force OR we need pvp, ideally we need both, just as in real life.

Same crap happens on the main map, only there are some who actually fear the consequences of their actions, as in being hunted down or banned. On the temp map there are no consequences.

Minectraft isn't a game, it's a lab experiment for sociology and psychology.

Its better that at least on the Temp Map we have PVP off, there are a lot of people that goes crazy, and when they kill you multiple times it gets really annoying, for that Hafnium decided to turn PVP off for the Temp Map. ( After many complaints of course )

And about griefing buildings, its a temporary map, few days and we will have the Permanent Map again, just hide ur building, you may not like hiding ur build and ur chest, but its a temp map :)

They get around PVP by blowing you up with tnt... repeatedly, so how is that better?

We have one of the arguably best SMP experiences compared to many other servers because of the extensive mods we run. Vanilla Minecraft has almost no functionality compared to us. At any rate, that is a lot of plugins to update, and many bukkit developers are too busy to update the second that a new craftbukkit build comes out, or some just fold entirely *ahem*pailstone.. :P

A lot of servers run mods, take a look at the server ads on the Minecraft Forums.

Obviously, but in saying that I mean that certain mods that make us our own unique server are not constantly updated.
