Looks like a lot of people went and updated to the latest build even after I posted about it... I dunno

If you still want to get into SMP, you will need to roll-back to 1.5. I have attached the files below. Move the Minecarft.exe to wherever you keep that and put the .JAR file into this directory (it's hidden): C:\Users\*USER*\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin

Sorted :5:

The newer one allows you to choose if you want to update or not :P
All you need to do is download the thing howard linked and replace your existing one.
Make a backup if you feel the need.

Apparently, when given the option to not upgrade it still looks for necessary upgrades as if the option is an afterthought, and now it is freezing and not finishing the search so it can open. Frozen at the end of the search.

Thanks again NOTCH!!!

more buggy than a cheap motel.

(edit) This is interesting. I had clicked the wrong version of client, aborted the auto download, which was causing my new client to lock up. After I allowed the completed download on old client, new client no longer froze. As I said, more buggy than a cheap motel. )

(edit) Nope... it upgraded my new client with the old client download - in a different directory. humpf!)

(edit) redid the steps to re replace the client, all is well. Sheesh!
