A mate of mine has a broken PS3, basically it overheated and it can't cool itself down. Does anyone out there know how to fix it? Because if I can get it fixed I get to keep it :4 :4 :5:

You're asking for anything besides taking a screwdriver and a look into the case?

True, but what do I do once I've done that? How will I know how to fix it? And what to replace?

Overheating could just be a broken fan, which should be replacable. It also could be something worse. If there is already some thermal damage, I guess you'd not be able to fix our without being somekind of Playstationfixer. It's like a PC which isn't booting... could be anything.

Is it still starting at all? Then you could at least check if the fans are working.

No, it's not coming on at all. I've not tried it again for a while mind. I might give it another try and see what happens. Hopefully it's as you say, just a broken fan that needs replacing. If it is I'm sure I could do that without breaking it any further

You could try vacuuming the fan, I'm not sure if the static could damage the ps3. This happend to a ps2 we had, wouldn't turn on, and we tried using it like 2 months later and it worked.

Never use a vacuum, get compressed air. Vacuums cause to much static and will cause even more of a problem.

Also, when using the compressed air can, spray some away from the ps3 before spraying into it, liquid will come out at first.

Well yeah if you do have compressed air use that, a vacuum shouldn't damage a ps3 if you're vacuuming the vents. To be safe don't allow the vacuum to touch the casing, but it really shouldn't make a difference anyway unless your using an industrial monster of a vacuum. Consoles aren't as sensitive to static as computers, and even then people still getaway with vacuuming their computers anyway, which isn't smart.

Might do, but I dare not walk into your house if you don't own a vacuum :P then again I don't vac my dorm room until I have to leave it after a year of living in it hmm that's kinder trampy...

Well I think the statics caused by air running over a surface, so I guess a low power air pump would be safer, but apparently the Ps3 manual says you can vacuum it. Give it a whirl.
