Post subject:  Public vote; Try out a steamless CS 1.6 server?

Now we're all being bugged by VALVe with their gay ads, its time to find a solution to it.

apperantly its proven hard to remove the ads after the last update, so thats not an option unfortunatly. All we currently could do for our players is load up maps like de_dust2_noads.

Now i've been searching for a solution, and found the following project; http://www.steamlessproject.nl

I've heard about this project before, and without really have taken a look at it, i said it would be cheaters heaven there as all VAC banned people would prolly end up there.
After doing some research last days i came to an other conclusion.

The steamless project was launched in 2003, right after the STEAM betas we're launched. This projects intention was to build an envoirment similair to the times of WON.
They have succeded in creating this project, now called WON2. Besides putting up a perfect WON clone, this project also created their own VAC system to protect the servers from cheaters.

To be able to play on WON2 servers you still need a legal CD key, and if found cheating, you will be banned for a year (Like WON used to do).

Currently the project has over 900 public game servers connected to WON2 (A couple are CS 1.5, but the mayority is CS 1.6), to my supprise a rather large network!

Now the question, shall we fire up a steamless CS 1.6 test server to see if this might be the solution to VALVe fucking up cs for us all the time?

If you want to try out CS 1.6 steamless, you can download it over at their project page. Your CS 1.6 Steamless install will NOT effect your current CS 1.6 install, and neither will get you banned from VAC2 for using or having it installed. As you can read on the disclaimer on the page, the steamless project is 100% legal.

Please head over to their site, give it a test, give it a read, and make your vote!

You're right Saint and if you noticed they were already shitting around with steam with non-valve/sierra games and advertising their shit.

I know they need to make money, but this is just fucking bullshit. Putting ads IN the game, wtf? They should pay us instead...

Anyway, and I don't fucking care if I get VAC banned or what ever just for this shit. Just lol at them..

So Saint do what you can and Ill try to help/do what I can.

And isnt it possible to run CS trough GameSpy anymore?

I hate to say it, but I don't care about the adds .. But, if the majority wants them gone, then so do I =)

- I'm not around as much as I once were, not near computers much at all actually, so I'd leave it up to all of you and I trust that you'll find a way to continue having fun .. Enjoy!

Will people that use steam beable to log ont our servers through that? Just thinking, we might have to start again with popularity and things if we do change it, and is it really worth it? I mea if we can put up the dust2_noadds and maps like that, theres no problem right?

Dont know what i should vote for.
...
I dont care about the ads in steam.
It's gay but what should we do.
...
But i also think a test server with this steamless project,
(if it works, without problems)
is a use worth.
...
So, let's try.

Edit: I didnt say i dont faith steam, but i think we could try it

Its an extra test server, not an replacement for the current.

Steam users wont be able to play on WON2 and visa versa.

Those adds don't bother me that much but I think that we should try this steamless project. Later we just have to consider carefully weather to use it widely or not..

Around how many players got this WON2 thing?

It's no idea of setting up a server if noone plays it, right?

If it got a lot of players, I'll gladly install it, but we don't wanna get into a dead end, do we?

Looks like most servers on the WON2 system are CS1.5

I dont know if there is much public around on steamless CS1.6, so im also not spending any resources on it which might effect the current servers.

As SL is actually written for windows, and there wasnt much linux info, i found it a nice project anyway to start with.
You gotta see it as a hobby i think, as i dont have much expectations of it becomming anything populair. Its just a nice challange to get it running propperly at Linux, and being able to actually play on it. Nothing is actually supported for SL cs 1.6, no amxmodx, no metamod etc. So it will be a good playing ground to learn more about how all the stuff works as im gonna try to get a wc3 server or so running on it :P

Maybe by accident it will become populair, who knows, maybe it wont :P We'll see

(god damn im fooockin stoned)
