This is a sort of application/just seeing what people think/want :P for a role playing server on grand theft auto multiplayer (samp)

Reasons why we should have a server

The gta community is a very big community and san andreas is still a very popular game this means more people joining spa and using the forums ect ect

another one is that it is very differnt from what we have at the moment having a role paying server means that we can have a differnt side of the gaming community instead of just minecraft players :P

another reason is well its fun i have personally been playing on a few roleplaying servers and they all seem a good laugh sure you get your idiots once in a while but with a good admin team behind it that will be fine :)

Problems

Well there are a few problems with having a gta sa server one is that the whole multiplayer is a mod so that might be troublesome (but the mod is very stable and works perfectly fine)

another is that with being such an old game there are quite a few hackers around so being able to detect these hacks might be a problem (solution mods to detect hacks)

and also another small blip is for client side if you have gta sa on steam you will have to downgrade it to be able to play the mod (simple enough just a drag and drop into the system files)


so just as a recap i think it would be fun, i mean having your own mafia family running some casino, course thats fun :P and the whole aspect of roleplaying would be a fun difference from the servers we have at the moment of course there are blips to iron out but thats easily done, main thing is after all would anyone else like the server :)

my guess is that we won't have enough interested people from within spa to get a server community kick-started - which usually means that it's active for a few nights until people lose interest, meaning we take the server down shortly afterward and some people have done alot of work with little result. if it were to work, it would require a few current SpA's to really get into the game so that we would be able to admin it properly, at least until we get regulars keeping the server active who can then start to take on those duties. however, i've seen some videos of the mod in action and it looks like it could be good for some shits n' giggles, so if we have enough SA playing people interested then it might prove fruitful

I have a friend who has tried to setup his own server so he knows what he would be doing so I'll talk to him soon about what is needed and stuff so we can see if it is possible. Then we'll have to see if we actually do it. :D

exactly my point scatterbrain :) i have played some rpg servers and there really fun differnt jobs gangs familys i think it would be great fun of course we could change the server ( or have more than 1) that has things like deathmatches or other options just depends what people would want out of the server but as you said its if we get enough people wanting to play it i think advertising is what we need

Hey ells551. We certainly can look into getting a DS server for GTA if it is feasible. If there is of course enough interest.

Obviously we will have to do some research, our servers are run on Linux for instance. Also as scatter has mentioned if this does become popular then we will need game server admins which is normally a job for SpA members.

No harm in giving it a go though with the right knowledge and expertise.

awesome news about the server i will try and drum up some more support with the server as the people i have talked to about it seem interested with the idea :)

i have done some research already and the samp servers can run on linux in fact there is a download link on there site (http://www.sa-mp.com/download.php)
so thats good news for that but as you said there is a few things to get ironed out first but great news to see that it could be going ahead :4

Yep I'm looking at the different game modes and how to implement them but first of course we will have to see if we can get the server without anything extra running smoothly.

As it looks like it is going well i might as well tell you all about issues with the samp server at the moment if you buy gta sa from steam you will get v 3.0 to play on a samp server you need v 1.0 there is a simple fix to this either buy a DVD version (but that might be v2.0 so be careful of that) or just use a simple downgrade file so you can run it what the file does is make samp think your on v 1.0 when your actually still on v 3.0 that's the easiest way to do it I will post a link to the download and if there will be a sperate forum for gta I will post all about it in detail with links and installation guide :P

Yeah were most likely getting the test server up today or tomorrow so we can test if it works without game modes. After it is working I'll start testing at what would be the best config for the server :)
