Today I went to a small training exercise with some firefighters from towns around the area. They don't often get to learn on actual trains due to the railroad companies wanting to use them, or at least not have them idling in a rail yard. I got to follow the firefighters around and listen to the explanations, but I wasn't allowed to get very close to the cars. I did, however, manage to go into the passenger train and up into the engine (it's wicked loud in there) to look around. I didn't stick around in the interesting part long enough to take pictures though, because I didn't want to blow my eardrums out. :P

You can view the whole album (I left out a few pictures) at a much more reasonable resolution here.

all of the cars and engines:
my favorite one... the food car:
more of the amtrak coach (the open box there is the refrigerant):
getting ready to do a search and rescue with fake smoke in the food car:
the next group waiting for their turn:
bringing a dummy out on a board through the emergency window of the coach:
Most of the firefighters had to leave towards the end of the exercise on a call, so we finished up not long after that.

They were built in the late '60s and have only really had a few interior renovations since then. Most of the non-repair work on the outside was just new paint-jobs to match the look of the company. But they sure are sturdy! IIRC the windows are a half inch thick - I do know that they will withstand almost everything you can throw at them, bar explosives. And it would take you quite a while to get through the spot-welded stainless steel siding panels with the jaws of life.

That's the main problem I have with American trains.
Firstly, there is no collision zones. All European trains are built with collision zones to take the brunt of the impact.
The glass on the Amtrak train is the same that was used in the German ICE trains. A couple of years back, an ICE train was in a horrible accident, and a lot of people died because the emergency response could not break through the glass to get to the injured passengers. Now, European train windows are either made more thin or made with predetermined breaking seams:

There are two emergency windows on each coach that can be taken out from the inside, and you can get all the windows out from the outside by prying off the rubber seal with a crowbar.

I don't know the details of the accident, but usually the doors at each end are pretty handy for getting people out as well.
