I got a nasty vista error.Every time I try to start up, "Configuring updates stage 3/3 0%, Do not turn off power". My computer message then restarts and gets that message again. It Loops on and on.

What I've tried:
Starting up in safe mode
starting up with safe mode with networking

Starting with a recovery disk and:
Auto repair (numerous times)
System restore

Anything else I could do?

Windows 8 usage is even stupider than Vista - at least Vista fucking works.

As to the OP: you are fucked mate. :( Its a standing bug with Vista (and 7 tbh, but less so) that sometimes the updates fail and it corrupts the updater itself, getting stuck in this loop. Only way I have found to get around it is to fully reinstall though I have gotten a system restore to work a few times.

As howard said you could try a full system restore or you could download ubuntu onto a disk as an iso file then make sure your computer boots up the cd drive first and it should make it so you could run your computer through ubuntu (note this diddnt work for my pc at least at the moment but it could work for you)

Well, I downloaded a vista disk and clean re-installed. Lots of drivers were missing so I went on goose chase on a friends laptop to download them all, most painfully, an Ethernet controller driver. Lots of trial and error, but every thing work eventually.

Gotta wonder why you didn't just grab Win 7 while you were about it though...

Get it from a friend of a friend who happens to have to same specs as you that just so happens to have a tool that will transfer a license to your computer no questions asked.
