yeah, a full format is literally a COMPLETE deconstruction of all the data on the disc you formatted.. usually if you know what you're doing in DOS you can go in to retrieve lost files and stuff, but you've actually erased the hard-drive so DOS doesn't remember anything to look for i'm afraid.

sorry man :(

damn:P
My sister came for a visit, and ofc i let her go into the computer.
She went about on msn space, and showed her images there, (from the new place she has moved to,to study) to my mum.
When she was done I sat down, and the computer was fucked up. And it kept restarting over and over again...
So i used a "boot CD" with windows xp to try to run the computer with. And then suddenly it said something like "Deleting all files on your Harddrive" :? I just sat there looking at it, cus there was no "stop button" :P

There's loads of programs available to retrieve data after a format.
In fact, you can retrieve data back thats been lost behind up to five FULL formats.
A quick format doesnt delete data, it just removes the table that stores
all the file information that Windows would use to read what file is where.
A full format in actual fact doesn't do it very differently... I've retrieved
data back from customers PCs that have had a full format AND an OS
installed over the top of it...

Try betanews -> fileforum and search for data retrieval programs.
I'm sure once you found one you like you could get a key for it, or if the
datas worth it, even buy the software.
Failing that, you can physically send the HDD to many companies that
open them up in a clean-room environment, remove the HDD platters,
do some work on them and can retrieve ANY data thats there, wether
its been formatted, overwritten, whatever.
Typical cost for Professionals to do it: £250 - £400

And it's impossible to format the HDD where Windows is installed
from within windows, so what REALLY happened?

i was under the impression a format puts all bits at a disk either on 0 or 1. I know its possible to even retrieve data after a format, but was not aware regulair tools were also capable of doing this.

Yeah, I've dont it a few time. It's a myth that a full format actually WIPES the drive. Realistically it's a glorified Quick Format.

More to the point, it's impossible to format a Windows drive from inside Windows...

The program I've had the most success with (about 80-90% data retrieval from a fully formated drive) is "GetDataBack". It can take a while, but it's an efficient (but unfriendly) program...

Let me know if you want it and a key ;)

I cant really tell u what happened. I just had the "xp - cd" inside the computer when i restarted the pc for the 9999th time. The computer was fucked up, and I was trying to start it by using the cd. But then it started formating itself as I said...

Windows doesn't do a "Deleting files on your hard drive".
It does one of TWO things from the XP cd...

1) A format of the drive (very hard for it to actually start doing that, you need to
make about 5 different key presses on different screens to confirm it.

2) Deletes the Windows directory. Also very hard to do (takes another 4 key
presses on different screens also), and even then it leaves EVERY other folder on
your PC intact - Which obviously includes Your Documents folder, your desktop,
everything in Program Files etc, etc.

This just seems really strange to me...
