Phew - I'm so glad TF2 didn't end up being like this. Seems utterly generic and much too complicated to be as accessible (and yet full of tricks you have to learn) like the current game...

I wonder if this was really a TF2 tryout.

I've seen some early TF dev stuff, and it was nothing close to this...

Eesh. I dunno what the hell that was but it sure wasn't TF2. It's no beta. It just looks like a crappy mod.

Valve left many things unfinished or unused in the code, and it's Team GabeN's job to get everything together and working. Starting with adding missing team and class selection menus to the game code, all the way up to getting VGUI Screens on objects working, the team has done an amazing job with making TF2 the same it was when Valve was developing it. There's still much work to do, but we are confident we're making good progress and don't plan on stopping any time soon.

This has allowed us to (very closely) re-create what Valve called Team Fortress 2 at around the time of HL2's leak. I say "very closely" because the only thing that's different are the assets - those have been created by us or borrowed from various mods to use during development.
well you could actually say that its a mod

I dunno. I remember what Team Fortress 2 looked like when it first surfaced all those years ago. From the looks of this, it looks like they were going for open terrain like Battlefield. Not that they did a particularly good job on this vid cause it just looks like open tundra.

Still, the TF2 pics that were leaked were superior to whatever this is, not to mention there were vehicles involved and most of the screenshots seemed to take place on levels which looked like the levels that took place outside of Black Mesa when Gordon escaped from the underground facility. I suppose also kinda like the way the TF2 levels look now, except without all the American Mid West paraphenalia.

This level just doesn't seem to fit into anything I've ever seen or has even been hinted at ever since Team Fortress 2 originally came about, up to it's present incarnation. What's with the Engineer(?) building a doorway in some kind of ruin. I just don't really understand what any of this is. The only thing that looks remotely interesting is the barricades he's putting up. That I could believe came from the original TF2 as I remember seeing them in PC Gamer and thinking they were a good idea.

Still. I could be wrong. It took a very long time for the game to see the light of day and it has changed so much in that time. I think a lot of that change can be attributed to the Battlefield series to be honest. It seems like that's what the original TF2 was going for with realistic battle and vehicles. I dunno what happened with all that really...

If you don't know what happened then listen to the developer commentary on cp_gravelpit and cp_well. ^^

Also, TF2 underwent more than one iteration and total overhaul so this may very well be one of the planned versions. Valve said they even had a "commander mode" in it once (like Natural Selection, BF2 or Savage/Savage 2)

DrMcMoist thats one big post  , as Lim-Dul said tf2 underwent more than one iteration and this is one of them .

Valve's second concept for Team Fortress 2 featured a Sci-Fi theme with none of the characters or even places being related to the Half-Life story.

You have to read the post more carefully. When the HL2 code leaked, the then current TF2 version also was leaked. But only the sourcecode. No player models, levels, textures, materials, sounds, ....
So you can bet that the stuff Valve had at this point looked different and better than the stuff the GabeN project is creating now.

Let's not forget that if the game looks crappy then it's only because it's a test version. I believe this is more of an internal alpha than a beta. Developers usually go through a procedure called "fast prototyping" to check out if their concepts work etc. before polishing their product - what use would be hours spent on e.g. quality models when the gameplay is shitty?

I used to be a Guild Wars alpha tester since the first public event and boy, trust me, the game that the users received as the final version (although this one has been patched and updated endlessly as well as you might know) was NOTHING like the stuff we've been playing months before release. =)

Yeah Nutty's right. I think what we can all agree on, is that we're all glad TF2 didn't go down this Sci-Fi realistic road as it would appear here.

Its the humour, art style and gameplay that makes TF2 so great compared to other generic FPS games.
