First signs of a PSU failure (could be). Overheating?

If not, then I blame it on the video card drivers - they're always a good scapegoat. :-D

thats excactly what happends to me, im sure its overheating or too small psu, makes it overheat running at max load all the time

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

My PSU has 550 Watt.
Maybe it is broken. i dunno.
Overheating? I dont know. My Case is always open. so the heat can escape.
But maybe i have 2 test it.
The driver is the latest afaik, but i have 2 look this up.

Thx first.

Hi,

Try to vacum clean your coolers everywere troughout your case.

Mostly this kind of failures indicate a cooling issue. I'd first point at the GFX's coolers, as they often seem to break first. After that perhaps CPU/PSU. It could also be a malfunctional cooler on your chipset if you have any.

I advice to download some tools to messure your cpu and gpu with. Your PSU can be messured by just touching it and feeling if its insanely hot.

Ok i downloaded the newest driver. Problem still there.
The temp withour CPU is working is:
Mainboard: 42°C
CPU: 41°C

I wasnt able 2 test the Temp when its working.

@SaintK: Yeah 2 clean the case was my next idea. Thx. i really have 2 do this.

Ok ill try this out and post if it is working.

What about your GXF temps ?

Ok i cleaned now my case and the Problem is still there, but after the PC crashed i touched my video card and it is really hot. Could the video card be the reason for the problem? How can i cool the video card?

what is the GXF?

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

I've experienced it. For me it was a heating problem (one of the fans actually had fallen out of its socket. I still use that socket and have my fan taped onto it  )

Other then that, take a look at this topic: http://forum.specialattack.net/viewtopi ... =45&t=2140

Both me and magisk have experienced it. Seemed to come out of nowhere, but this was all we had to do: Run dxdiag and reduce hardware sound acceleration. Allthough this might seem like a strange thing to do, it just might save the day.

GFX = your videocard =)

GFX - a bad acronym for graphic cards (actually Graffic Effects, because FX reads kinda like effects - woohoo)

I'm sure what was meant here is the GPU temperature which can be measured e.g. by downloading GPU-Z.

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

Ok i tested the videocard temo after reboot. It is 85°C.
the mainboard and the CPU is about 50°C i think, (forgot the test ....-.-)
Thx for your answers.
ill try out what pip said.

85degrees on being idle? (showing windows desktop), or when playing a game ?

After the game crashed and i reboot.

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

then its likely to be your videocard overheating!

Author:  Phil.- [ 30 Jul 2008, 21:56 ]
Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

During the game the videocard is about 90°C.
Motherboard is 47°C
and CPU 46°C

So the videocard is 2 hot? damn
I also reduce the sound acceraltion thing, but dunno if it helped cuz i dont played long enough.

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

Uuuh - 90 degrees is not good... Not good at all...

I have modified my firmware so that the fan speed adjusts to my GPU temperature and even though it's pretty hot when it's idle (around 69 degrees) it stays that way even under full load. ^^

Yeah, i have 2 look if i can do something like this 2.
I do what u said me Pip. Thx, but it doesnt help :(
When nothing help i have 2 buy me a seperate fan for the videocard.

U sure its broken, and not just stuck somehow? Try to disassamble it and put it back together, it might be some dirt came in it.

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

No nothing is broken, only the video card is 90°C with a working fan.
So i think i have to cool them down, right?

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

The temperature isn't that overheated for the chip. The 19xx gets quite hot. Up to 90° on load for the 1900. The 1950 should be a bunch of degrees cooler, but taking the current temperature in Germany in account it seems quite reasonable... but I just can be too much for your card sample. Also it should be way cooler in idle mode (<60°). Have you checked the GPU temp directly after reboot?

Solution 1: Replace the standard cooler with a better modell. I've got the 1900 XT and replaced the default one with an Arctic Cooling Accelero X2.

Solution 2: Open your case and put a ventilator beside it to get lots of fresh air into it. Perhaps this is the easier version if you have a vent around. ;)

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

Yeah i really think i have a ventilator. Maybe its cool down my room 2, cuz its f*cking warm here. Im just sitting and sweat.....

If its the videocard, you should be able to generate extreme quick lockups by running this stresstest;

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

K i just stresstested my video card.

Result:

I started a "no end" Test. After 3-4 minutes my ATI driver says:
"Fuck you, Phil. The video card is getting to warm (110°C  ), stop that stress test or i will kick ure ass."
(or somthing like that)

I stopped the stress test and i think the videocard could be a reason for the crashs. Do u agree? :D

Thx @ Saintk 4 the link.

Ps: Why do i have a water boiler, when i could use my videocard....^^

I'd grab a couple of egg's!

Enjoy dinner!

K i just turn the details on "very low".
The videocard stay on idle Temp.
The Game doesnt crash, but is unbelievable ugly ^^. Everything works fine now. Thanks guys!! :18

Post subject:  Re: I have a problem.

Hmm... "very low" is a bit overshooting the mark. I'm running on high details with my XT1900 withour any problems and your card is an improvement of mine. It really seems to be a problem of the cooler. Have you checked if it's really clean? Is the fan turning up on load? Perhaps the fan control is broken. Have you tried to put a vent next to the case?

just buy a new cooler, you can get some really good ones for like 15Euro's.. no very low settings..

I was about to propose the same, but it would be easier to just grab a 4850 or similar. ;)

I'm also running an 1950 series card and no issue's here.. Everything max details.
