Yeah, right, and other companies are like charities and don't put anything in their pocket. ;-)
As far as I know from my discussions with independent developers Valve is pretty OK when it comes to their terms & conditions.
It wasn't meant in any bad way... it's just a clever move from Valve and everybody would do it the same way. I mean they add just 10 bucks and the people will still buy it. If you would increase the price of a game in the stores here by 10 Euros... the sales would definitly drop.

There are really great deals on Steam (like weekend offers). I bought Two Worlds for 10$ (was something around 7€ then) while it was sold in the shops here still for 40 euros... but I won't buy anything "blind" on Steam... it's just an alternative for me.

dude, don't feel screwed, a reseller over here who only sells over the net, mostly the cheapest games and such, sells it for 70 euros :?
For me, steam is cheap. With the dollar to euro ratio I'd be paying 48 euros for it, plus some currency change fee or some other bs. I'd say steam is cheaper then! :4 :P
Dude 70???

The problem with the "other bs" is that our lovely 19% VAT can make quite a heavy impact on the price. :/

I would get CoD4 if we hosted it, it seems pretty popular in the lan centre i work at... I could even perhaps sneak our server when its up onto the internet favourites list there! :4

we were thinking COD4, but we have our heads towards COD5 now. Its being released november, which should in theory grand us enough time for the server upgrade before it arrives!

Cod4 became so irritating after about 3 months that i switched to tf2 completely - couldnt have fun on server that thrown all great cod4 ideas away to make game as similar to counter-strike as possible. After the release it was great fun mixing perks unlocking items and enjoying great maps. But after a period of time it became what all pro-tournament-fps must be - almost all perks were thrown out from most servers, you would get banned after using grenade launcher ( or at least someone would share opinion about your mothers style of life ), and every round was almost exactly the same - same weapons, same tactics etc ( just like playing dust2 in cs for 10000th time ). So I guess that standard rules server ( all perks, weapons, airstrikes etc ) would be popular only among our community.

The closest thing to TF2 is ET QW. I might actually unpack the box if there was a spa server :)

I just tried the mods that were promoted to Steam, and Insurgency is one awesome game, that I think SpA should look into hosting!

Oh so that's why they all appeared on my Steam?

I don't want that shit cluttering up my interface man. I like things neat and tidy.

You can minimize the list of games you haven't installed. =)

By the way - hasn't Saint said that SpecialAttack used to host Insurgency and it didn't quite lift off?

It's true. It was a long time ago when custom mods really weren't that popular yet.

I agree that CoD4 is a better game, however there are several things that promotes Insurgency over CoD4 tbh.

1) It's a FREE game!
2) It's a steam game, which makes it easier to incorporate with our existing system (In case we want SpApoints to work in the other games aswell)
3) It's a game that focuses heavily on teamplay

1) Free ain't per se bad, but is it a hl1 free mod? or is the graphic enhancement due to the fact that it's hl2 now?
2) COD4 is steam as well. Same kind of hosting style as our current servers.
3) Same as COD4.
As for now, we're gonna wait till COD5 comes out in the hope it'll be a better version of COD4. If not, we can always make the step back to COD4.

The Necromancer (4970)
Yeah, there are *some*, just not that many. And still few people play the game properly, last time I checked. I think The Ship failed a bit because of its own ambitions. Not unlike Microsoft Allegiance (which is a free game now ^^).

I get guest passes every month so I can send you one if you want to play the FULL game on a time-limited basis before deciding on a purchase.

Yes, we already talked about that, and we probably will host it. At least if I can convince SaintK :D

I was a long time NS1 player, it's a great game. No other FPS game I played till now requires and promotes so much teamwork like NS.

Hell yeah! NS1 was THE SHIT! No other mod has taken the original HL1 engine to its limits to the extent NS did. People were swooning over Savage 2, which is like twice as bad as NS1, not to mention NS2, which will be awesome (although nobody knows when it'll be released ;-).

NS and Hostile Intent were my 2 favourite HL1 mods. :o (Hopefully Hostile Intent PR will be released soon aswell.)

Hostile Intent also had pretty decent looks to it.

The Necromancer (4970)
Have you seen Public Enemy? One of the saddest MOD stories EVER. The team made an awesome MOD late in the HL1 development cycle but nobody played it (they were all set on CS, DoD etc. - not bad MODs but definitely worse from a technical point of view) so the team abandoned it. :-(

I think the same happened to The Opera, a MOD where you got points for killing people in a stylish John Woo fashion. (You were able to do all kinds of acrobatics).

The Necromancer (4970)
Ah yes, that's true. =)
One of the few games or mods I can think of that had the option to add bullet-time to multiplayer matches. :-D (Update: I just read the "Bio" page and the team confirmed that this was in fact the FIRST game ever to included that feature in multiplayer :-D)

On a related note - do you know what the same team is working on nowadays? Their own (non-mod) multiplayer space-sim!

http://naumachia.aureasection.com/

Watch the trailer, it looks pretty epic and from what I gather the full game will be a bit like an updated Allegiance.

Speaking of which - I wonder if there will be dedicated servers (or a central one). Perhaps another game SpA should host? I LOVE space-sims (about the only type of sim I enjoy :-P)

Yeah, the website was launched a few days ago so it's fresh news - it's good that they have anything playable to show at all. :-D

One of the guy apparently worked at Crytek so we can expect a pretty good engine. ^^
