Here's the problem, In TF2 I'm getting around 20 FPS on DirectX 8, all low settings. Here's my specs:

Graphics Card: Radeon X1650 Pro
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
Memory: 1000MB RAM

According to a website these are the recommended requirements:
CPU: 2.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 512 MB
Graphics Card: DirectX 9 capable graphics card 256 MB

Any suggestions would be appreciated, And I might be willing to buy new parts though note that I don't have much cash ATM.

A somewhat default question, tried updating all of your drivers?

Yeah, I searched the ATI website today and it appears I have the latest drivers.

easiest part would just be to upgrade your RAM, since there's probably a lot of it going to the system, and other utilities

how bout at which settings are you trying to run tf2? which resolution and do you have everything set to high? antialiasing at what?
The computer you just described ain't that powerfull and tf2 is quite a heavy game. What was you fps in the beginning?
What operating system are you running?
A deffinately yes on the ram, you could easily upgrade that for not too much money. (the whole computer could use an upgrade though)

Yeah I did, no sign of improvement. And I've also turned everything off, swapped to DirectX 8 and I'm using the lowest resolution and I'm still getting the same FPS. :?

And I've been getting around 20 FPs since I bought the game tbh and I'll be sure to buy some RAM. :?

how about other hl2-based games?

If everything else works fine try searching under something like "very low fps team fortress 2 problem" in google, or first be sure too check official guides and faqs.

Orange box games have upgraded engine so maybe thats why, on other mat_dxlevel settings you have the same fps ?

buy yourself some more mem, buy yourself a new video card,or buy yourself a completely new pc.

And in the end you'll find out that you accidentally set fps_max to 20.

Also why DX8?

I tried a FPS config which more or less puts everything down to as low as it can possibly go and I still got around the same FPS so I'm guessing something is capping it and I don't think getting extra memory would help.

20fps isn't unplayable

If you've tried lowering and lowering your settings and still get 20fps have you tried increasing them to see how high you can go and still keep 20fps?

I tried this tweaker for when I play TF2 on my laptop - it worked well for me.

I've tried a few tweakers before and none seem to have made a difference. :? And yeah, 20 FPS isn't unplayable, though it usually spikes down when in a fight.

JediLardMaster - I just hope this isn't the Tweaker that has been mentioned umpteen times on the forums, most recently in a thread that was deleted for some reason. If it is the Tweaker described here:

http://forum.specialattack.net/viewtopi ... 254#p44254

then under no circumstances should you spread word about it. It can f00k up your TF2 settings for good without a word of warning as it did in UndeadDruid's case. It's better to tweak the settings manually (as outlined in the links I provide in the above post - they're what the Tweaker uses anyway, only without the risk of overwriting something irreversibly).

P.S. I just checked your link - JediLardMaster - luckily the links in the quoted thread are dead because it looks very much like the Tweaker I'm describing (4 categories, .NET Framework required etc.)

i don't see the issue with the program. Just create a backup from your config files etc and happely experiment away. In the worst case you'll need to re-install TF2. So what? His FPS is crappy anyway, its atleast worh a shot, or either keep playing as it is now, which he clearly isn't intrested in.

My advice, experiment away, try anything you find on the web. You'll get there by trial and error. Thats how almost everyone here of us gains their knowledge about stuff.

Post subject:  Re: Computer issues.

The problem here is, SaintK, that the program doesn't tell you what exactly all the settings do and some of them are saved in non-config files (AFAIK in the registry or somewhere else). Like I said - UndeadDruid messed up his game by applying settings that permanently disabled all decals, even sprays... If I recall correctly not even reinstalling TF2 helped until he overrode some settings that the Tweaker used. It's much safer to tweak everything consciously and manually, especially since the only difference is that you have to type in the variables by hand instead of clicking on checkboxes and it's almost as easy.

The Tweaker does nothing above altering normal graphics-related Source Engine settings, which you can read up on e.g. on Whisper's Wiki (the articles written by Wally3k):

http://whisper.ausgamers.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

The variables described there are the only ones that affect game performance so you don't have to trust any "wonder Tweakers" that can f00k up everything. Other than that you can only go for low-poly model packs etc. - this is basically as much as you can squeeze out of the Source Engine if you have a slow computer.

Well, I'm hoping to get a upgrade in the next couple of months so I'll just put up with it till then.

Post subject:  Re: Computer issues.

I'm using it ok? If it has caused problems then best not download it. From memory it has an unistall feature and if that doesn't work all you need to do is delete the entries it makes to autoexec.cfg

Author:  Lim-Dul [ 12 Nov 2008, 00:38 ]
Post subject:  Re: Computer issues.

Yeah, it depends on the settings you used - some of them are problematic, some are not. As to more info about the problems read the topic I linked to. =)

AFAIK in UndeaDruid's case it wasn't enough to delete the autoexec.cfg OR config.cfg, you had to set the variables which the Tweaker changed back to their default values manually which is a bit beside the point when it comes to using the program in the first place...

at what resolution are you actually running Repel? Maybe it's possible to put that a bit lower, say to 800x600 if you're not already on it.

Well, for awhile I was using a low widescreen resolution, but lately I have been using the 800x600.
