Post subject:  Maybe same problem as Mcmoist ......

For the last 2 days my steam apperears to hate me....

When i tried to load tf2 it would verify game files for 3 seconds then stop and not load game , and it would carry on doing this. Now if i loaded dods it would work fine , and now it wont load any game... i have tried :
Reinstalling All the game content
Reinstalling steam
Verifying game cache files
renaming / deleting Clientregistry.blob
Changing update options to "Not Automatically" and back again
Closing all back ground apps
And everything else on the steam forums that it suggest to do.

I am just about to defrag game files but failing that is there any other options?

Also could this MAYBE be caused by a failing hard drive , because i have a feeling my hard drive is on the way out with the amount of problems i have been having lately.

Thanks in advance ;)

You can try defragmenting the game files using GCFScape because it's usually much faster than the built-in function. However, the problem seems much more serious from what you're describing.

Ah - link to GCFScape:

You will also need to enable Write Access in GCFScape if you want to defragment the files but the program will inform you about that itself.

Also what do you mean when you say the problem is worse than im describing ?

Not "than you describing" but "from what you're describing" - I presume the problem is more serious than a simple fragmentation of the game cache. Fragmentation can lead to long loading times but it wouldn't make the whole system fail...

The thing is mate I actually fixed the problem simply by re-installing Steam. Everything works as it was before the problem arose.

I did put in a new hard drive though a few days ago.

You think that may be the cause?
