Hmm if someone has some "sensitive" material they want deleted, the recycle bin doesn't remove it it simply removes your access to it, it only gets deleted when it gets overwritten, so effectively you can recover any lost files, i tried it, it's quite interesting looking through all the crap you deleted over the years that fragments still exist in places lol. so in theory without a clean up program, someone could steal the computer (or if you are a criminal, police get hold of your computer) and gain access to that info again! Just info for anyone who doesn't know =p |

Yep, I think the US government standard for truly deleting classified files etc. is deleting them and overwriting the sectors six times with random data. Then the data is pretty much unrecoverable, even with specialized equipment to trace the "sector borders" on the HDD dish. |

http://www.killdisk.com/dod.htmLink related: It's related information for those interested. I used that program once with my HDD trying to wipe it and see if it maybe fixes bad sectors. On low security free method, it would take like 10 hours. Oh and by the way, that was a goddamn Velociraptor. |

You don't need to run any other programs for deleting files either, such as this "basket" modification you speak of.

it's been said already, but CCleaner does wonders. for uninstalling stuff 'properly', Revo Uninstaller. but I'm still looking for a decent defragmenter, and I didn't particularly like diskeeper. any suggestions? |

I got a free copy of "Ashampoo Magical Defrag" which sits in the systray and defrags in the background when the system is idleing... after 2 years without any explicit defragmentation all disk are at max. 5% fragmentation. ![]() |
