So im installing ubuntu right now.
So what apps do you reccomend i get and do you have other tips and tricks?

Depends on what you need it for. :) Pretty much anything you'd need for it is however centralised in the package manager.

You may find this link useful, The Perfect Desktop - Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) @ HowtoForge. On the same site, HowtoForge, you can also find a lot of "tips and tricks".

We know what Compiz Fusion is capable of - at least the people that have any kind of Linux experience. ^^
I'm dual-booting with Linux Mint - it's basically Ubuntu but with some additional stuff and preinstalled programs and proprietary codecs/drivers so it is fully featured right off the bat.

The "yes" part is a bit overstated. =)
You'll have to use Wine and that means that sometimes things will work just fine and sometimes they won't - not even Steam itself is fully functional under Wine.

I got it to work on DX8 only. This was with a 1.x RC release.
