long story short, the fan on my PSU started making an annoying scraping noise, and since it's going to cost more to fix it than what I bought the PSU, I'm just gonna replace is (with a corsair vx450w, if anyone cares :p).

how do I get rid of the old one? I know that it shouldn't simply be thrown out, since the capacitators still hold alot of electricity, and I doubt I'll be using it as a backup. I take it recycling is the best option, but I'm not sure of the specifics. halp? :<

thanks in advance

The capacitors actually don't hold any electricity if the PSU is disconnected for a long time. It all depends whether you're madly eco-friendly or not. If you are then there should be some electro-garbage collecting stations in your town. If you aren't too eco-friendly I'd simply throw the PSU out with the rest of the trash. :-D

Officially you should just turn it in for recycling, alltho i can only be bothered to do that when i have loads of stuff to recycle, otherwise i just throw it away.

it turns out there's a place for recycling this sort of thing not far from where I live, which is a big co-incidence seeing as I live in the middle of nowhere :p so yeah, looks like I'll just be recycling the thing.

thanks for the replies :D

Just go throw it at some swans and/or ducks.

They won't like it but if you live near these animals, as I do, then it's a lot less time consuming than trying to recycle.

Nice tip.

You could go further by leaving the power switched on by using an extention cord and then if you happen to miss it will fry them anyway

bit of an update - I still haven't got rid of the old, but the one's in now and it's just dandy, I'm struggling to hear my pc fans at all. so if any of you guys need to replace your power supply, the corsair brand comes recommended from me, mmkay :p

Couldn't you just replace the fan yourself? The fan is like 3 bucks in whichever currency and it should be just plug and use.

Though you would have to make sure the fan would fit - or do some wirework yourself.
