As I see it now , they have tons of bugs, so there's not one bug I hope they fixed...
Long live buggy games, they give the world something to complain! Luckily we have real issues like what color should the motd be, or what haircut saint should have!

I dont understand why do you complain.
TF2 has one of the best support after shipping in the whole gaming industry.

I think they should have at least given you the option for a zune theme steam!

DAMN THEIR HIDES!

I think Valve's small project teams (that oftentimes work on several games at once) concept starts to show here. They were to busy ironing out L4D bugs now so TF2 will probably have to wait a bit longer but I'll be glad whenever the job gets done - especially in L4D, finally, less complaining about that one. :-D

There are some more pressing issues than new ( shitty) GUI

Post subject:  Re: TF2 update installed

I noticed slowdown in tf2 for first time, in badlands outside the attacking spawn, drops to 50fps, which i notice quite quickly, indoors is like 120fps.

Only since update, but not played badlands for yonks...

Wohoo! Even if the TF2 update sucked a bit we got an epic Steam Client update today - the most important part is that the overlay browser has been tweaked and you can finally go to a specific address without using workarounds. That's pretty useful since the overlay activates for all games you're launching from the game list and that means that I can e.g. have a walkthrough or something like that opened while playing, which will come in VERY handy when reviewing games. ^^

Except that they should have used another browser instead of the embedded IE control. I don't understand why they chose it. In the forum thread about this, one of the devs said, that they might change engine in the future, because they have to use a lot of workarounds and hacks to get IE to work like it does. There are so many (open source) rendering engines available, I really don't understand why they went for an undocumented control that doesn't expose proper APIs.

The browser in the overlay is really handy, but it's way too slow if you're used to a good browser (=Opera).

Arn't they using the local IE engine? When i ran steam under Wine i had to install IE under wine for the browser to work. Maybe they use it cause every windows pc contains parts of IE they might use? (just a wild guess)

Yep, good guess Saint. However, since Steam includes the possibility of very easy updates they shouldn't really be so scared of using other engines. I agree with Demm that Presto (Opera's engine) might be a good choice since it's a very fast and lightweight engine BUT it's proprietary and while Opera as such is free, there are licensing costs for commercial applications (that's how Opera makes money).

I'd go for WebKit simply because it's so amazingly compliant with all standards (first engine to pass the Acid3 test flawlessly with development builds!).

Webkit would have been my guess. Worst issue is that they are using IE 6.0 and not 7.0. :/

Or 8.0 - the first IE to pass the Acid2 test - LOLZOR. ^^

That's exactly what I said. They use the COM control, that ships with IE and is installed on every windows PC and embed it in their application.
Drawback of this are: the control is slow, has no real API, has a restricted feature set and it behaves differently between different IE versions.

Read above. They use the control, which has whatever version the user has updated his system to. So for some users it's 6, for others it's 7 or even 8.

Opera and Webkit achieved this at pretty much the same time. I'm using Opera 10.0 alpha and it renders Acid3 flawlessly and is much faster than Webkit.

Of course I know how Opera's licensing works, that's why I said they should use one of the open source engines.

kk... have just read an article and not dug into this myself. Nevertheless: Any other engine would be a better choice. ;)

Ye... Acid3 is nice, but not that usefull at the moment. I'd be happy if the browsers would display basic stuff as they should. ^^

Can we call on the ingame steam browser using sourcemod, rather then using a ingame motd window to display html content in ?

Author:  [SpA]demm [ 16 Jan 2009, 12:24 ]
Post subject:  Re: TF2 update installed

No.

The ingame steam browser is part of the overlay. The motd browser is part of TF2. We can't access the overlay from a TF2 server.
