Help!

I am writing an article about different experiments I have done in the lab. I have a lot of images and charts from the data I obtained. But now when I'm typing in word, all the images and charts move in all possible directions. They have to stand still :? if you know what I mean.
Can I anchor the images in any way so that they don't move when additional text is added or when I change the text?
Hopefully you guys understand what I mean, because I don't really know how to explain it better!
thanx anyway!

I'm using OpenOffice but I'm pretty sure there are many similarities between the two. In OpenOffice you can right click the image you inserted and choose Anchor to Page, Paragraph, Character..

Goodluck! :)

I can't find it in my word 2003, but open office is free, so I will try it with open office! Thanx!

wow thanx a lot, weird that I did not find that myself haha. Stupid me with google.

But there is still a problem:

To modify how the picture's anchor behaves, you simply need to right-click on the picture and choose Format Picture from the Context menu. Word displays the Format Picture dialog box. Click the Advanced button on the Layout tab. The resulting dialog box (Click here to see a related figure.) has a tab labeled Picture Position where you can specify the placement of the floating picture. (In other words, you can specify how the anchor should behave.)

There is no advanced button on the layout tab :(

I don't know. I can't remember when I last used MS Office. Just go with OpenOffice. :) It has a lot of useful stuff as a plus, like the option to export the document as .pdf.

If you have access to Word, you must never, ever, switch to OpenOffice, no matter how outdated your version of Word is.

I've been there and back. It left me scarred.

Because paying money for a product when there is a free open source option available that provides more features is good? :)

When I right click on a picture in Word 2003 and choose format picture I get this, which does give me the advanced option.

You don't get this?

More features != better.

Those were just my opinions, based on a few months using each application. I haven't done any real comparisons between the two.

I agree with m3n formerly known as nein!. ^^
Don't even think about switching to OpenOffice.org unless you're a very basic office user. I have been using OpenOffice.org for around a year one or two years ago and I don't know why I tortured myself with it... Sure, I wanted to save money on Microsoft Office but still...

OpenOffice.org is almost indistinguishable from Microsoft Office (as confirmed by Revenge =) if you're using around 10% of the MSO suite like most users but becomes incredibly crappy if you are an advanced user.

Don't listen to sebas - OO.o has FEWER features than Microsoft Office and the ones that are already there are oftentimes implemented in a very clunky way - e.g. all the things connected with language tools or the review mode are messed up - I should know because I'm a translator/journalist and work with Office suites (especially MS Word, although I use SDL Trados add-ins and Transit as well) for a living. =)

MSO is probably the only really good thing to come out of Microsoft - if you learn to use it, of course. And by God, I tried out all the alternatives only to hit a brick wall each and every time when I realized after a while that something can't be done in a "competing" application.
m3n wrote:

Well, most of the time one does equal the other - if you're e.g. a professional writer and need all the features you can get. Luckily sebas is wrong about OO.o features and hence we don't need to rely on this argument. ^^
m3n wrote:

Well, I have and above are some of the results. =)

P.S. Sebas, you can save documents as PDF with MSO if you download a FREE plugin directly from Microsoft. ;-)
And don't tell me the plugin will cramp your system since OO.o uses about twice as many resources as MSO and is twice as slow to begin with anyway.

Lies!
Visual Studio > Office > Windows > Everything else > Internet Explorer

Purely from a software engineering and user friendliness standpoint. Of course you can't directly compare those different software packages.

Also, OpenOffice is complete and utter crap compared to MS Office. I'm an Office power user and I have tried using OpenOffice, and believe me, it just sucks.

I'm yet to find a need that can't be satisfied in OO. :) Then again I never use language tools such as spell check. So, as stated before, from my point of view it's a perfect option. Not to mention that it's free which is a long way from 150$.

Another very unpleasent thing is that, as a computer science student, MS gives me student keys for pretty much all of their software...except for Office because, apparently, students don't need that.

Got me on this one - I can't really say much about VS because I'm not a software engineer but I reckon that my father spoke highly of it. =)

He, he - well, I have to - it's my main tool I earn money with so the investment pays off and I can't afford being convicted of piracy in this case since it would ruin my professional reputation. =)
That's the downside of being a freelancer (self-employed) - you have to think and act like a company...

Like Lim said, open office sadly is missing some advanced features that MS office has.. but it is viable option if nothing fancy is needed.

Open office is more like this:
