Post subject:  Aftertoughts on my Half-Life 2 marathon

I'm just about to finish up EP2 and it's been a great week and a half. To this day HL2 and its episodes still are my alltime favourite FPS'.
Thought I might share my thoughts with you, which unlike all of my other posts don't contain sarcasm and not a whole lot of no-no words.

Remember the techdemos, screenshots, trailers and the infamous beta leak that all led up to the day when we finally could lay our
dirty hands on HL2?
From the moment I stepped out of the train, I knew I was in for the time of my life. It was so cool to actually do the stuff you''d previously
seen in the trailers. Back when the FarCry demo was released I spent a great deal of time just pushing barrels around, watching crates fall down
in a realistic manner as well as punching that suspended shark with my machete. Physics like that at the time were something we'd never seen in
video games before, at least not so realistic. When I finally got to wield that gravitygun I went completely apeshit. Who would've thought that
physics could be so much fun, eh?

It's hard for me to pinpoint what's exactly my favourite moment in HL2, but I think it must be when you leave the train station and see the Citadel
in all of it's glory the first time.
After talking to some of the residents you really get a good feel of what kind of state the city is in. Everything is just so well though out.
Breen talks about that people aren't allowed to breed anymore and later on you pick up that doll and you can hear children screaming, even more eerie
than all of Ravenholm put together.

The pacing of the game is something that really separates it from other FPS', it just feels perfect. You can tell that Valve has put a lot of work to thinking
what the players themselves are thinking. There were never any dull moments for me and you were constantly introduced to something new to do or a different
approach of what you've just done. The scenery is also constantly changing, and you can really feel that you're escaping from City 17.

The story and characters:
I've seen a lot of people that've gone really deep into the story, trying to analyze it. Me? I'm doing what Gordon does, just
going along and doing what I'm told. I like the fact that you don't have to understand a shit of what's going on, because in reality you aren't supposed to either.
My favourite character by far is Alyx Vance. I don't exactly know what it is, I think it's just the fact that she's just so god damn believable.
No huge ass tits, skimpy clothing or suggestive comments. Down to earth, natural girl(albeit fit alright) and her lame jokes kicks ass. Giving one of them hunters
a log to the face felt really good after seeing her being impaled by one(NO DIRTY THOUGHTS!).
All in all, HL2 is one of the few games that feels like it's more than a game. The Metal Gear Solid series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Silent Hill 2 comes to mind.

I look forward to EP3 and I'm probably gonna start all over again once I'm done with EP2.
Raise your crowbars for the mighty HL2, everyone!

How could I ever pick a favourite moment.. the whole half-life series is just beyond great <3

Every year or so I play the whole series (hl1+expansions till the latest released) so yeah, one of my alltime favourite games.. it was great in 98 or so when I bought it and it still is to this date one of the best series ever made~ :D

Fanboy? me? naaah..

I prefer HL1.

Alyx ruined HL2. Damn slow mofo not keeping up with my awesome moves.

I also missed the diversity of the weapons a tad.

Nooo, that was a very good idea to give a second main character to game. I wonder, what will be in ep3 with Alyx. I hope, Valve won't take a simple way and do Alyx a beloved Gordon's woman; I hope they will do a bit more interesting plot connected with she.

I played all HL parts (except Blue Shift and Opposing Force, but I'm going to buy them <3 ) and I think it's most awesome singleplayer game ever made. I love games with expanded story which aren't cRPGs, so Half-Life was the best what I could ever buy and play. And Half-Life 2 is amazing sequel. Usually, sequels sucks in comparision to first parts, but there it's IMHO on equal level. EP1 and EP2 aren't as good as HL1 and HL2, but I also luv them.

And there is an awesome site for every HL fan: http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/ . Plot of all Half-Life's written in a very good way. It helps to arrange everything known from game in wholeness. But even this doesn't solve who is G-Man.

BTW. Someone tried Black Mesa alpha version which is available on torrents?

Sanitarium
Faust
Day of the Tentacle
etc.

:P
But those are adventures.

So then: Deus Ex, System Shock 2, even BioShock.

I wouldn't say the storyline is HL's strong point but the overall atmosphere, dynamic gameplay, level design and minor innovations the games bring.

There are many games like these, but Half-Life is unique. Always when I played it, I wasn't bored of it, even when I tried to pass through the same moment for few times.

btw. from adventures, the best game is Teenagent - but it's only in Polish so I think that it would be hard to understand lines in it, but humour and plot of this game simply rocks ;D

added later: there is english version of Teenagent, my fault ;p .

You gotta be kidding me dude. Bioshock's story was horrible. Not to mention the oh so clever plot twist at the end. But I've been meaning to give System Shock a runthrough, but I can't get the movies to work.

And moose: God damn. You haven't played Duke Nukem or Half-Life 2.

You mean system shock 2. The first one is..erm..REALLY old. :-P
As for SS2, play it with this: http://shtup.home.att.net/

BioShock..well, I loved it. :) The Bid Daddies, THE MUSIC, the theater level and so on.

Post subject:  Re: Aftertoughts on my Half-Life 2 marathon

Yeah. Did it fix the movie issue?

I'm not saying Bioshock is a bad game by any means, but halfway through I got really bored.
Problem is that you see everything in the first half hour. I wish they could've saved the Big Daddies for later out in the game.
And the stupid fucking minigame for hacking, reminds me more of Oil Cap* than anything. But I'm going to rebuy it for the PC.
Maybe it will make the game better. Doing the same thing over and over and over really took it's toll as well. Having a "mission"
to kill some big daddies and harvesting little sisters really didn't fit in at all.

Of course it has it's flaws, but considering the games being made these days, it did stand out for me. Then again maybe we just look for different stuff in singleplayer fpses. :P

Yeah, there's so much shit in the world of FPS's. I blame it on the consoles and that games aren't meant for geeks and nerds anymore, it's all about the casuals now.
Even Bioshock suffers from it. But some of the flaws are pretty near being game breaking. The fact that you don't get punished what so ever for dying takes away a lot of the tension. Sure it's scary, but you know whatever happens you'll survive. Why is it like that? Because it's made for the consoles and they don't have the abillity to quick save.
