You prolly have the cheap onces with the slow controller? Those arn't even faster then HDD's :(

I have this one:

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/f ... ii_2_5-ssd

120gb model and cost me £240.

Loads TF2 and L4D quicker than a 15yr can have a w@nk, and its totally silent.

However the write times just drive me mad. If something is writing to it then it slows everything down - lots of 'Not Responding'.

I would go back to a fast normal HD but it cost me £240 and therefore I'm kidding myself that its really brilliant to make myself feel better.

Its shit

As soon as SSDs are cheap and really outperformance HDDs on usual day work (Windows boot, Office, GAAAAAAMING) I will completly follow this new standard :)

Yeah - SSD technology is developing so quickly, it doesn't pay to buy one yet IMHO unless you got some spare money you have no idea what to spend on. =)
But yeah, they are awesome and most certainly the future - at least as a place to hold your OS and favorite apps.

why defrag a SSD ?

It says not to defrag my SSD in the manual. Not sure why, apparently they are so quick it doesn't need it.

Defragging puts the physical 0s and 1s in the apropriate order so the reading head of a hard disk drive does not need to move too much.
A SSD has no reading head. Aditionally SSDs have a limited quantity of how many 0s and 1s can be written on a single cell. Don't wast this rewrite processes on a function that won't speed you up anyway.

Indeed. The gist of which is, defragging an SSD DOES NOT speed it up and can actually impair the drive in the long run.

I got the WD Velociraptor some time ago.
Was oscillating between it and some random SSD.
I'm glad I chose it (SSDs had too many unknowns, uncertainties and sometimes strange performing reports).
A 5min Windows boot time turned to tens of seconds (with all little & unneeded programs loaded [and i got plenty]).
The very first time I boot from it (btw, it has a very nice program on their site which basically clones the primary partition so you can boot right away from the new disk) when I logged in EVERYTHING loaded and after it did, only AFTER, did the Windows Start-up sound play. Needless to say it impressed me. Of course performance degraded over time but it's insignificant (e.g. the start-up sound plays later now  ).
Gaming-wise I don't feel any improvment really. TF2 loading times are the same I think, but they never were long to begin with. Haven't played anything else much so it's not a verdict, however I am suspecting a bottleneck in another PC component.

But yeah, SSDs are the future.
Regarding defragmenting them: it's counter-productive. As previously stated it's intended only for hard DISKS. Defragmenting a SSD shortens it's life span because you're just wearing the device off without any purpose. They still support bad sectors though :ugly: .
