The Necromancer (4970)
Phew - long title; but informative.

Basically I'm about to burn around 20 DVDs with files of different sizes and usually I'd have to manually group them into chunks so that they fit the DVD without too much free space left.
However, this is tedious... I wonder if there's any DVD Burning Program/Extended File Manager or whatever that would have an algorithm for choosing random files up to a certain size.
I know that there are LOADS of programs that can create archives/ISOs/other types of DVD images (which are also archives :-P) and split them into DVD-sized chunks but I don't want to do anything to the files except grouping them. Strangely enough I couldn't find any such program on the internet after quite some searching. I guess I could write a Bash script for that on Linux but doing that would probably take as long as burning the DVDs themselves, since I'm not a programmer. ;-)

I googled for the academic name of your problem (knapsack) and found e.g. the TL Knapsack Packer.
http://www.freeware.de/english/tl-knaps ... 21766.html

I hope that helps a bit.

The Necromancer (4970)
Thanks, br0! You helped me immensely! Especially by naming the problem - now I know what to look for if I want to investigate further. :-D

Dammit... Knapsack didn't come to my mind... only "Kofferproblem". :ugly:

The Necromancer (4970)
If anybody is interested in what I found, then here's three applications that more or less get the job done:

Burn to the Brim http://bttb.sourceforge.net/
SizeMe http://lars.werner.no/?page_id=2
PackEmIn http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2042263,00.asp

The first to apps are free, the last one you have to pay for...

Some more:

FillCD, Ignition, FileSwift... All of them are crappy. ;-)
The best one when it comes to functionality would probably be FillCD but it is shareware and can't be bought anymore because it hasn't been updated for ages - LOL!
