Ethernet throught the electric wire? yes or no?

Nop, to much noise slow speeds

Tbh this technology scares me, probably because i don't understand it, i think the idea is brilliant, but i feel all plugs should be fitted WITH ethernet ports or something similar, then through that harness the power of the sockets.

I know the japs invented internets through electric sockets (sorry i really don't know how else to word that :p) and it goes about 100gb a second or something insane.

who knows where we'll be in 10 years xD

edit: googled a bit, couldn't find the japanese invention i mentioned, i saw it on a BBC News 24 tech show a year ago ish.

but i found this: http://www.techradar.com/news/digital-h ... ket-161001 is this what you're on about Mr.Green?

it used to be really really bad, but nowadays it's getting much better.

Post subject:  Re: Ethernet throught the electric wire?

I voted no for the ethernet.
However there is a big but:

Due to the huge noise which is present on the electricity net, datarates are really slow. Ethernet over powerline is already possible however due to the slow transfer rate and the huge overhead on the ethernet protocol I think it is not very applicable.

In the Netherlands there is a new law which states that in the next 5 years we will all receive an Energymeter, which can commucatie with the Energycompany using the electrical grid.

apart from that our school and others are also busy working on devices like fridges, which "talk" to these meters.

So to come back to the main question here, and to not go really deep into this matter, I think ethernet as in "Internet" as most of you know it will not happen over powerline. It is just to slow, however via gateways and other devices it will be an extension to the Internet where you can monitor and control your devices when you are not at home.

If anyone is more interested in powerline communication, check out companies like "echelon" which create devices which can communicatie over powerline, they also have a protocol for communicating over powerline. echelon is just one of the players and searching for "powerline communication" will give you additional info.

Isn't it so that currently the Ethernet over power is half-duplex aswell?

Post subject:  Re: Ethernet throught the electric wire?

yes it is

You can apply al kinds of signals on the cable, just like on the normal ethernet. Difference is that the datasignal is modulated on top of the current 50Hz power signal.

And just like a normal cable, only 1 "object" can set data on the line, an other object has to wait untill there is no data before he can transmit, or data will mixup and turn out corrupt.

Same applies to powerline, first you send something and when your done, the next person can send.

what im thinking of is actually something you just plug in, in one room(with ethernet) and another one that you plug in at a another room in my house. Then those 2 will use the the electrical wires of my house to send data. And i get a internet connetion at my own room from my father work room. :ugly:

So you guys got me all wrong

Well no, because the technique is the same pretty much.

Same arguments go for inhouse networks trough power sockets. half-duplex, low troughput etc.

but the packet loss shoul be less, right? and i have a "up to 24mbit" connection. Do you think the package loss will be tpo great or is it still playable? (now when playing in dadys room my ping is 20-31, when im playing withj that thing in my room i have 120-150 or even more) So do you think i get a lower ping or not or does this idea just totally suck as?

It has nothing to do with packetloss in the first place. If it shows packetloss you simply have a bad connection, faulty wires or hardware. Your latency might improve over wireless, but its still half-duplex, so its both crap. Best thing you can do is just run a wire from the router to your pc.

but my dad says it will look ugly like heall to have a wire throught the WHOLE house. But will the connection be stable adn what will the ping be?

Well the connection between your pc and your router will be a ping of 0.xx

But can the 4 person who voted yes step forward and say why (prospects/good things with that)

Post subject:  Re: Ethernet throught the electric wire?

Well, I use it to connect my satellite receiver box (yes, it runs linux  ) to my network and it runs pretty stable. Not much speed though. But I don't need that for my receiver :demm:

Other than that I probably wouldn't use it for anything that requires any kind of performance, especially not gaming.

like i said, i heard / read some good sounds about this technology, and if it is the only option you have, then take it (maybe you can buy it and return if it doesn't do the job well enough)

Afaik the socket needs to be within the same electric group, atleast it used to be like this.
