I dunno if this is the purpose of the hard&software but , i will give it a try .
In 2-3 months i will buy a new pc , i will use it mostly for games/map making stuff like these.
I tought about :
processor: Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz Wolfdale Box
Motherboard: ECS NF650iSLIT-A
power source : Sirtec HP-450-A12S
hdd: Western Digital 640GB SATA-II 7200 rpm 16MB Caviar SE16
RAM : i will start with 2 GB DDR2 and another 2 gb later
case : it depends on what i can find at the stores .
video : Asus ATI Radeon HD4850 1GB DDR3 256-bit OR Gainward GeForce GTS 250 2GB DDR3 256-bit

well if you notice incopatibilities please tell me . and also , is the procesor ok ? ( i want intel not amd)

Mate dont save money on the case and the power supply. They are investions for many years and many of your even newer pcs would use them.

And don't just buy 2gb of Ram. Ram is so damn ass cheap at the moment that I recommend anyone who thought somehow somewhere sometimes about a ram upgrade to do this upgrade as soon as possible.

i can spend 2000 RON the video + proc+ motherboard + case+ power supply = 1800 -1900 ROL , 2 gb RAM are like 100-200 ROL so i cannot spend this much :3

If you can't spend much don't take a DDR3 system as I think you may want.

I suggest the bit older AM2 stuff with DDR2. Its comparably very cheap, has nearly the same performance and all teething problems are allready sorted out.

He was already going for DDR2, not DDR3 :P

AM2 is an AMD socket which he said he didn't want ;)

ok lets start at the motherboard if you want to use the top 2 sata ports on it you are going to have a hell of a time because the graphics card will sit over the top. Why the intel 650i chipset? get a quad cpu like the Q8300 Yorkfield and a P45 board they both should be the same price and will perform better :) only disadvantage with the p45 is that you wont be able to put 2 nvidia cards in.

It's not all about core speed... I could have a pentium III at 4.0ghz but it's still going to be slower than a 8400 at 3.0ghz...

Once you go into multiple cores it becomes a lot more complicated than just the basic numbers, frosty knows a lot more about the performance of these parts than you do ;)

a few things;

power supply: I wouldn't scrimp on this, it'll save alot of hassle later, and I wouldn't say sirtec is exactly a trusted brand (considering I haven't even heard of them :p). go for something like, say, a corsair. also, what sort of wattage are you aiming for?

motherboard: can't really comment cos I've never heard of it, although just be aware that the P35's are still fine and dandy, aren't really out of date, are compatible with the processor you're going for (I think) and could save you a bit of money, so it's something to bare in mind. if you want to go down the P35 route, I would recommend a gigabyte board.

video: going by the rest of your system, going for anything less than a 512bit card would be a waste, as this is the area you really want to be spending money on if you're gaming, especially if playing at higher resolution (1650x1050 or above, say)

oh, and be sure you go for a 64bit operating system if you're going for anything more than 3gb of RAM, as that' the max that any 32bit OS will recognise

other than that, it's cool beans, although personally I wouldn't go for a HDD that big, but that's personal preference obviously :p

(disclaimer: I've been out of the hardware scene for a good few months now, so I might be behind on a few things, don't bit too much if I get anything wrong :<)

Games are more and more adjusted for higher performance with multiple cores.
Officially according to benchmarks and tests, games perform better under 32 bit XP then 64 XP but there's been a lot of discussion about the way benchmarks test in this matter. As almost all of those benchmarks are meant for 32 bit systems. I have tested the thing out a long while back and I got a few more fps out of 32 bit then 64, I do still run 64 bit though. 64 Bit is just broader then 32 bit, remember the difference between 8 bit, 16 bit, 64 bit in game consoles? This is kind of the same thing, although the jump ain't that big as going from 16 bit to 64. I do notice that in windows itself, things are able to go much faster. Also, your hardware, is made for 64 bit technologies.
You could also choose to install vista 64 bit and getting the dx 10 with that, although I strongly advice you not to come near to Vista. If you'd wanna install vista I'd advice you to save you some bucks and buy yourself a medion pc from the Aldi :P

BTW - unlike Bucky I do advise Vista since it runs most games a bit faster than WinXP these days (in your face Bucky) but truth be told I'd wait for Windows 7. Also, the choice between 32 bit and 64 bit is pretty important since it directly affects the maximum amount of RAM your OS will support.

The only reason not to get 64 bit is that it won't run 16 bit programs.

But those are usually ancient games which can be used with dosbox or bios/general hardware related programs which you aren't supposed to run inside windows anyways.

Go with your guts - buy whatever you can get cheaply. I know there are both NVIDIA and ATI fanboys on the forums so you won't get much information that's viable.

Having said that I plan on buying a new PC as soon as Windows 7 comes out (I'm using an OEM version of Vista so I will have to buy a new OS anyway) and this time I will most likely be going with ATI for a change. =)

Well ATI have been releasing some amazing cards lately (4870, yes the 4890 is better but its just an update, the 4870 was the awesome one).

Then again some Nvidia releases have been pretty good competition, at the moment it's hard to go wrong when choosing between the two, DX11 might make things interesting as well :3

And keep in mind that current NVIDIA cards don't support DX 10.1 while ATI's do. Might not be a big deal BUT when e.g. DX 11 arrives ATI will have had somewhat of a head-start.

I guess you mean 1GB here, not 2?

Yes the 4870 (Or the GTX260, but I think this one is even more expensive) is very nice, but I think it is just slightly out of your price range.

Between the 4850 and the 250 I would say the 4850, just because I think it is cheaper for pretty much the same performance.
