Just read this:

http://www.techradar.com/news/computing ... ghz-593950

Now I'm not into overclocking, and I doubt anyone would be able to run a stable pc with that high a overclock. But it made me think why AMD don't sell them overclocked already, or with software to automatically overclock for you. Seem that they are sold well below what they should or could be operating at.

Why should they sell overvclocked CPUs? The quality of the produced CPUs differs from piece to piece. The one processor may run stable at 2,9ghz the other one runs stable on 3,2ghz (with standard cooling). The first one is being packed as a 2,9ghz CPU the latter one in the 3,2ghz series. If the big houses amd and intel refine their craftmanship that they reliably can produce 3,5ghz or whatever CPUs they will make a new boxing for it and demand higher prices.

Overclocking may have come to some kind of sport for pc enthusiasts but the veeeeeeeeery big majority of pc users don't even know what that is. The only thing you may get directly from the producers are multiplier free processors. With them you can test on your own how much ghz the CPU will deliver. The mentioned 2,9ghz model could (depending on the cooling) run with 3,3 ghz, 4ghz or maybe even the 2,9ghz are the maximum barrier allready.

i think oc from the factory is stupid, because if you don;t know this , you will try it home and you will make your processor a fried pie

as birdy says, it's heavily dependant on the quality of each individaul chip

but still... a quad core running at 7ghz. it's a nerds wet dream
