I wonder if it will be developed from just a timer so that the guy firing can decide when to explode it with another button press.

resemblance to the demoman's sticky bomb detonation system is unintentional. maybe. :ugly:

At that speed you have no chance to trigger it manually. But something slow like sticky bombs could work :)
But I don't know how efective will it be since enemies will be using medigun to ubercharge themselfs.

You should try and search for the Bofors 57 Mk3.

It's a naval gun developed by Sweden which first of all has the capability of switching it's ammo type in one second, allowing itself to both engage surface and air units. It can carry smart ammunition that can be programmed when to explode. If you engage small boats, you have the round explode above the target, raining down armour-piercing steel balls on the target. It can detonate on impact, or even be set to detonate a certain allocated time AFTER impact.

I don't know, you could hide behind it/inside it for quite a lot of protection...
