First up is it free (GNU License) utility called G-Parted (you might know it?) It's a drive partition software that allows the end-user to create/edit/expand/"glue" partitions together, i use it on a daily basis on some of the machines i repair and it's a little beauty

Download: http://sourceforge.net/project/download ... .4.5-2.iso

Secondly, again another free tool (not GNU but openly released by the creator) Packard Bell Diagnostic CD for RAM + HDD tests, Runs basic DFT's and RAM tests for basic troublshooting by the end-user before going off the professionals for repair.

Note: This works on ANY PC, not just Packard Bell's

Download: http://support.packardbell.co.uk/uk/ite ... agCD23.exe

Thirdly, Acer's Passworld Removal tool, To my knowledge this only works on Acers running XP/Vista.

Here's a nice site related to the topic.
Before I discovered it, one of my secret projects was to do a website about what applications are best to use and why, like a guide for users. I also like the topic of the thread: there is so much to gain by receiving advice in this domain. I met many friends who didn't know of an alternative to their applications or a better one altogether (e.g. Total Commander), and I myself know the usefulness of getting a hint about an helpful application. There should be a school teaching people how to live their cyber life properly ^^

Pretty useful site if you want to stay on the legal side of things: http://www.osalt.com/ - The Open Source Alternative
The sites lists open source software that is a replacement for prominent proprietary products.

Spybot S+D - http://www.safer-networking.org
safer-networking.org wrote:
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

although spyware search and destroy seems a bit dodgy with vista (I just stick with avast! and the standard firewall) I can vouch for ccleaner - very awesome program, must have.

I should add it wasn't the ISP that caught me it was the people that monitored the P2P downloads/uploads (the film companie I guess) which then inform the relevant ISP.
