Don't think so. The project is meant to finetune 6vs6 gameplay*. I doubt that any of the changes approved there will make it into pub games simply because Valve designes the updates and maps especially for 12vs12. The balance in gameplays is also completly different. Pyro-spy-heavy-engie might perform awful in competitive play but they have no gamebreaking issues in pubs. Any change for the first could turn out overpowered in the second.
Imo the best thing they could do is separate the two gamestyles completely and work separately for each. Balancing an item, map or class for both is pretty much impossbile.

Still, awesome community support from valve's behalf.

Which would split the pub and the competitive community even more and will make it even harder to get new players into the leagues.

Players that spent 3 months on pubs and got an pretty good idea of the game would have to learn it entirely new, basically - they will be more like "screw this, I'm going back to Multiplay"

If you really are interested in playing competitively you will want balance, developer support, good community and a high skill ceiling, not having it easy. There is a hardline difference between comp and casual players and trying to lure casuals with easy pickings woun't make the comp scene any better. Sure, it might make it more numerous but not better.

It's not like as it is the tf2 comp scene is growing with pubbers turning pr0. It's old comp players swtiching games.

so this means that there'll be an alternative version of TF2 to play? although fun, it could cause a split between the 'vanilla' and 'competitive' camps.

We don't know for sure what it means because none of the players involved are allowed to share info on what they're testing. The project's goal is however stated to improve 6vs6 gameplay specifically, not tf2 as a whole.

Either way it seems interesting... yet a tad confusing. Hopefully Valve will straighten out the question marks in time :)

It's been hinted on the mailing list few months ago they'd be doing some testing with competative teams to straighten out all the problems and add features for that area.

Besides that i think its their perfect opertunaty to test the new game mode & maps.

Some players got Team Fortress 2 Beta in their gamelist aswell, so I hope its really a version with big changes. The game gets quite boring after a while :S

Really? TF2 is the game I enjoy the most since World of Warcraft (until Wrath of the Casual King).

Free updates for a free game (I didnt bought TF2 i bought Episode 2 :P) with many minor and major good tweaks and a very lovely community at SpA. And when TF2 gets a itzy titzy tiny wussy lil bit boring I play a class I have no clue about (atm that info fits to 7 of 9 classes) and start to learn it.
