If your CPU supports it, 64bit.

I'll make my parents pay for a family pack, also you can use the RC for quite a long time before the license expires.

Indeed - I ordered mine before the family pack was announced. :( Still, one is intended for a primary PC, the other for a media centre type server. I'm unlikely to need the third copy any time soon (unless talking my dad/sister into a new PC but they don't do much more than email/excel/word/surf the web and are "happy with what they have" still). Cardboard doesn't think he'll upgrade again for a while either (and I believe he got the copy of Vista he has paid for anyway).

Anyone been using/is using this OS in conjunction with gaming and other programs which arent notepad, word and calculator got any feed back, i.e. is it worth hitting up to the RC version now, is it as good as xp, does it have any compatibility issues or crashing issues esp with your gfx card etc etc?

Was looking into moving onto it as Ill be reinstalling windows xp tomoz anyway

The Necromancer (4970)
To answer your question: It's Windows Vista but patched up with everything that was released up to this point and some usability improvements/changes.
It's not a new OS kernel-wise (100% driver compatibility with Vista) or anything experimental and hence there is nothing to worry about - unless you're one of them Vista-phobes.

Well vista HAD poor compatibility when it was released... which makes me a bit phobic sure, but I guess drivers have sorted themselves out by now.. so if the kernal is the same then compatibility should be ok i guess... gonna get the 7227 build and see what it brings...

nothin ventured...

Yep, drivers and such have been sorted out. You can use the very same Vista drivers for GPUs, Soundcards and whatever that have been constantly improved over the last 3 years or so.

I switched from XP to 7 RC.
My games works, but TF2 has incredible performance issues.
Patching ATI drivers is quite hard, as the setup tool crashes. You have to use the console to run the installer.

I won't bother with windows 7 that much anyway. As far as I've heard and seen, I rather wanna keep hanging on to XP.

Aye but support will most likely end June 2010 as its been extended all day and night, and microsoft will wanna get some money off peeps with OS upgrades... :(

Also if windows 7 becomes nice and mainstream, developers might make directX10/11 games with some sort of conviction, meaning prettier games. and i like pretty

Well technically no. I haven't decided if I'm getting work or the taxman to pay for them yet.

Nerdish, tbh. (441)
i have been running windows 7 a very long time now and i am pretty much happy with it.

There was this program once that didnt let me install it, and some textbugs which prevents u to read what it says, but dragging your mouse over solves the issue.
I use ftp clients, photoshop, adobe reader, half life, eve, bf2, mumble, firefox and some other programs. everything works just fine.

Though it didnt let me install nnscript ontop of the normal mirc, so now its normal mirc all the way.

alot better than vista for sure.

I started using the windows 7 RC from when it was released.

I have not been using an OS on my gamesystem ever since then. I love it.

As for driver compatibility, I had some issues with my Creative X-Fi extreme music card. Have not yet resolved those, although I must say that since last upgrade of my driver it has been better.
