Title explains itself.

I'm interested to hear how many of you (if any) play an instrument.
What instrument?
Any preferred type or brand?
Inspirations?
What style or genre?
For how long have you been playing?
What do you like about it?

I'll start off:

I've picked up drumming not very long ago (about 2 months), but I've been dissecting drums and beats in songs for about two years now.
So I didn't have to start from scratch.
At the moment I've got a Roland HD-1 V-Drum Lite(*) because of my limited space, budget and parents' noise tolerance.
Once I've got my own little place and a larger budget I'd like to have a Pearl kit with Sabian cymbals.
I mostly like to play simple rock beats, very droning and grinding beats and sometimes funk.
My greatest inspirations are Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age) and Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Sone Age) in that order.
I really like drumming because it kinda comes natural and it's easy to pick up. And banging on those pads just feels right :D .

I'm a huge fan of drums too.
So I've began recently to start to learn some basics in drumming (by myself via internet lessons).
Due to budget, space and noise restrictions I am playing on the Guitar Hero World Tour drum kit.

You may laugh and think that's bullshit, but truth be told you can really start to learn playing on that.
It's very basic (snare, hi-hat, bass pedal, cymbal and 2 toms), but for a beginner like me with no other possibilities it's really good.
I mean you can play for yourself in the recording studio and learn all the stuff that comes along with drumming, or play the songs that come with the game.
Of course, in future I will buy a nice kit, etc. But for now, this is all I can get to satisfy my drum passion. :D
I just love drumming, you can really get into the feeling. I am always fascinated when I see other people playing the drums in concerts for instance, how they let themselves go, and just let the beat get hold of them. Love it! <3

*Scaring people with technical music crap! Waaaagh!*

It's fine to learn drumming with a kit like that, but I see some issues:
You don't have a pedal to open or close your hi-hat. It's very convenient to use that pedal to keep the tempo, but very hard to master (No, I haven't mastered it yet).
Also, I see a ride (on the right, where it should be) and a hi-hat where the crash should be (but it's still on the left so that's cool).
But where's the crash? How do you put accents on transitions in a song then?

i took drum classes for 2 years when i was 14-16 years old, havent played much since.
my motivation dropped a lot cos my drum set sounded like ass (millenium's  )
but ive been thinking of buying some electrical drums.. maybe when i have the cash
i loved to play led zeppelin cos bonham had some sick beats. iron maiden, deep purple and black sabbath got some great stuff too
funk was also fun to play
how much did those roland's cost?

This is my weapon of choice! The Roland RS-50.

Image

What instrument? - Piano and Keyboard. Since I don't have the space or money for an actual Piano though, I practice on this bad boy above.
Any preferred type or brand? - Yeah, Roland's. I used to be into Yamaha's but I walked into a music store in Glasgow one day whilst on a casual browse and the guy in the shop was playing the RS-50 and I had a total Wayne's World moment;

She will be mine. Oh yes, she will be mine.
Image

Inspirations? - Christ. I couldn't possibly list them all. My inspirations range from Beethoven to Elton John and everything in between and ever since. My inspirations never end. Ever.
What style or genre? - Any. Seriously, any.
For how long have you been playing? - 14 years.
What do you like about it? - Nothing takes you out of yourself and free's your mind more than when you sit down and just hit your stride. Those times when your fingers seem to act as if they're thinking for themselves and you don't make any mistakes. Therein lies, the perfect moment. And you always come away from that feeling up. And that's why I play.

Allright, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

Let's see some bass players and guitarists! Vocal cords are also an instrument, and a very hard one to master at that.
So singers don't be shy and post!

I'd dig a musical session at the next SpA-meet. Sloppy drunk and stoned tunes like a desert orgy at night, that would be cool.

one day I'll pick up bass. I might end up putting it straight down again when I remember I have no musical talent... but hopefully not

Used to play clarinet, that was crap, then I moved onto Saxophone, but I lacked any motivation to practice. Used to sing but my voice broke and then sucked too much, I also moved house which didn't help. ^^

I learn guitar at some point since my dad has loads.

Yeah. Unfortunately I started playing keyboard before I was old enough to realise this was the case.

And then I was committed. I was committed God damn it!!

Actually, a friend of mine (a bass player), has an interesting theory.

Bass players get laid the most because: Girls think the guitarists are cool and all, but to actually get them is too ambitious.
Drummers are just labourers and thus nothing special. So the only think that's left is the bass player.

His theory, however, is yet to be proven in practice.

Kinda hopeless, but improving (122)
I play piano/keyboard and guitar.
I learned the guitar because I thought it would make me more sexually attractive to women - but it didnt. Able to play stairway to heaven or not, i was still just as rubbish with them. Definitely the guitars fault.

I used to play the violin, just classical stuff in the orchestra, really want to start it again...

Played a bit of guitar I have 2 acoustics and sold my electric not so long ago, I can strum a few chords but never really took it that seriously so I'm pretty rubbish at it.

I can also play the keyboards but only a few Beatles tunes and chopsticks so nothing special there.

I used to be in the choir but I don't sing much these days so my voice is well out of practise, plus I'm not brave enough to sing in front of anyone.

Wasn't aware of that topic.

But we've got quite a few new members since January and this thread contains more 'why' instead of just 'what'.

I'm playing for about a year on this. I also tried to learn to play on keyboard and flute when I was in elementary school, but it wasn't so much fun for me as guitar is.
