I dug up my parent's old turntable and bookshelf (I think) speakers to see if it still worked. amazingly, the old Beocenter 2200 still has some life in it, though it's on it's last legs (sound was fine for a while but then cut out as if an amp had gone or something, radio and tape player don't work, off button is broken... it's ancient, basically), and for the few seconds it did work it was pretty magical. so now, I want a turntable of my own and to start collecting vinyl like a fiend.

this is where you guys come in. any recommendations for a turntable and appropriate speakers? I'm looking for a fairly compact, cheap-ish setup. don't want to do any DJ'ing or anything with it obviously. don't want a tape player or radio like the old one had, or the USB linkup some models have. I'm willing to spend a bit of cash on speakers to get some sound quality, but I would like to know my options in terms of price vs. awesomeness.

thanks, fellow music geeks! :4

This one is an absolute must if you wanna be rockin' some 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'.

The sound quality isn't fantastic, I'll be honest, but for the price; You're not going to find a more capable deck.

I'm not sure what you're price range is. For speakers I would recommend some Bowers and Wilkins 685's. They are absolutely fantastic speakers! They are about £300+ I think though. Let me know what you're price range is.

Stanton and NAD both do some really nice turntables, and I swear by KEF for speakers the iQ10's being lovely for small rooms.

However this setup may cost you around £500, before the amp gets involved. I'm guessing not as cheap as you'd like.

Sony do some with a built in amps for about £80 and Yamaha do a nice series of compact speakers offering bang for the buck.

Hm I'm not really familiar with home equipment.
But best turntables = Technics. As dj speaking.

And speakers, i dunno. I have just some speakers that are also used at party's.

I'll give this thread a decent reply once I've explored the option a bit, but thanks for the recs anyway!

He said he doesn't wanna DJ, I wouldn't recomend these for anyone other than a DJ or a dance enthusiast, who really wanna replicate that club/rave vibe.

Go audio hunting, find a nice independant audio store and ask to hear their recomended setup, most will let you do this provided it isnt to busy and take somethig to listen too.
